Northeast U.S. Weather Update

The Nor' Easter is much weaker today, as expected, and it will continue to bring plenty of clouds, scattered showers, some snow and breezy conditions today through Thursday.  Then an upper-level low will meet up with the Nor' Easter and this will bring in some stronger winds from the northwest on Friday through the weekend.  This next system may hamper some of the storm clean up at the end of the week, and could make it hard for some of the power company's linesmen from getting the power lines up. Satellite and Radar of the Nor' Easter formerly known as Sandy Expect power to still be out for days along the New Jersey and New York Coasts.  Looking at the photos and video coming out of New Jersey...just amazing damage especially along the coast.  Clean up will take weeks and months, and power is expected to be out at least another week, if not longer.  Some water still covers the roads, but as the winds turn to the northwest at the end of the week they will push the

Spook-tacular and Warmer Weather in Baton Rouge Today

Short Term Forecast :  We still have some chilly temperatures in the lower to mid 40s as we start this Halloween Wednesday under mostly clear skies. Warmer temperatures are going to finally return to the Capital City today.  This is due to the winds shifting from the northwest to the west and south.  This will bring up some warm air from the Gulf of Mexico .  At the same time, a weak disturbance will move through in the upper-levels.  That will give us some high clouds which will make it mostly sunny.  High temperatures will be in the upper 70s. It will not be as cold tonight thanks to the west to southwest winds.  Expect mostly clear skies with lows in the lower 50s.  Some areas in South Mississippi may still be in the upper 40s. Trick or Treat Forecast :  Between 6 to 8 PM tonight we will have mostly clear skies and it will not be too cool.  Temperatures will fall to around 70 at 6 PM and then continue to fall to the lower 60s by 8 PM.  The kids may want to have a lo

5 PM EDT Sandy Update

Sandy is losing it's Hurricane characteristics as it get absorbed into a much larger circulation, the Nor ' Easter.    The bigger one is what will bring in the high storm surge   tonight .  Right now, Sandy is located about  40 miles south of Atlantic City, NJ.    Looking at the latest satellite and radar imagery, landfall will be over Cape May/Delaware Bay in an hour or so.  Winds are sustained at 90 mph, and the  strongest winds will likely be in Cape May from what is left of Sandy's circulation.   Sandy is moving WNW at 28 mph. The pressure is still an impressive 940 mb. If Sandy makes landfall at that pressure, that would be a record for a land falling storm in the Northeast U.S.!   Again, all preparations should be completed!  Watch for rapidly rising water along the NJ, NY, Delmarva, CT, RI and MA Coasts!  Winds will continue to increase both on the coast and inland during the next few hours and overnight. Expect 50-75 mph winds along the coast and 30-50 mph winds inl

That is now earlier due to the faster speed.  Be prepared!  Many coastal areas are already flooded and the worst of the storm surge has yet to come!!! Hurricane Sandy 2 PM EDT Update Things will continue to go downhill through tonight and into Tuesday.  Please watch for rising water and the winds are only going to get stronger.  Power outages are expected to be widespread along the coastal areas and inland too.  The worst will be along the coast, but inland areas are still going to get rocked! This is a map showing the probability of where tropical storm force winds are likely. Notice how far inland they go!  Stay safe and aware!!  Look for more updates throughout the day.  -Dave

Late Monday Morning Sandy Update

11 AM EDT - Hurricane Sandy has gotten STRONGER!  It is located about 205 miles SE of Atlantic City, NJ.  Sustained winds are up to 90 mph and the pressure has fallen to an amazing 943 mb!!  Sandy is forecast to make landfall near Atlantic City, NJ tonight/early Tuesday Morning. 11 AM EDT Hurricane Sandy Forecast Track & Stats This is stronger than the 1938 Long Island Express Hurricane that was 946 mph.  What this means is that MORE water could pile up along the Jersey Shore and Long Island, NY.  I hope everyone who is reading this up north is prepared for the worst!!  This storm is going to be much worse than Hurricane Irene was last year. This storm is HUGE and the wind field is massive!  Don't focus on where it makes landfall.  Tropical storm force winds extend 485 miles upward from the center in all directions.  Hurricane force winds extend 175 miles upward from the center.  A 20 mile wide eye has now developed too.  Please take this storm VERY SERIOUSLY!  There will

Monday Morning Sandy Update

Hurricane Sandy is actually STRONGER this morning! Winds have increased to 85 mph and it is possible that it could get even a little strong as it transitions from a hurricane to a winter-type storm later today.  Landfall is still expected to be tonight/Tuesday Morning along the South Jersey Shore.  However, this storm is so HUGE that areas from NC to MA will feel the effects.  The biggest concern will be the storm surge that will be from 4-8 feet from Delmarva to NYC.  Then from NYC Harbor to Long Island & Long Island Sound it will be around 6-11 feet. That will cause major coastal flooding well inland. What to expect for the Coastal areas: Storm Surge of 4-8 feet from Delmarva to NJ, 6-11 feet from NYC Harbor, Long Island & Long Island Sound.  Keep an eye on all stream, creeks and rivers that drain into the Bays.  They could back up with surge, and when you add in the rainfall, they could easily flood even if you are well inland!  Winds of 50-75 mph with higher gusts.

Sunday Evening Hurricane Sandy Update

Sandy is going to be a very large and possibly historic storm!!  Right now it is located about 485 miles SSE of NYC. The wind field is over 1000 miles in diameter! It is forecast to make a landfall in South New Jersey on Monday Night/Tuesday Morning . Before landfall it will transition from a hurricane to a winter-type storm. This DOES NOT mean it will be weaker.  Actually, it could be even stronger! Please listen too all local officials when they say to evacuate and be prepared for the worst!!! What to expect along the Coast:  The biggest concern will be the storm surge. Along the Delmarva Peninsula through the Jersey Coast you can expect a storm surge of 4-8 feet. NYC Harbor and Long Island, NY could have a surge up to 10+ feet! If you live along the coast, and are prone to flooding you need to plan on leaving! Hurricane Sandy Update for family & friends up north

Please DO NOT take this storm lightly!! This is a VERY LARGE hurricane/winter-type storm. Right now the tropical storm force wind field is over 1000 miles in diameter! That is incredible! While it is still a hurricane with 75 mph sustained winds, please don't just focus on that. The biggest issue will be the storm surge and flooding! Sandy will make a landfall late Monday Night/Early Tuesday Morning now along the South New Jersey Shore as a hurricane/winter-type storm with at least 75 mph winds. Areas from the Delmarva Peninsula northward to Long Island, NY will all feel the effects of this storm. What to expect for coastal areas...A storm surge of 1-2 feet is already affecting some of those areas NOW. I recommend evacuating INLAND if you live along the coast if you haven't already.  On top of the storm surge, heavy rain totaling 4-8 inches will be possible along with 50-75 mph winds. Please expect widespread power outages that will last for days thanks to the numerous tr
