Severe Weather Warnings Map

Check this map all afternoon and evening for the latest severe weather WARNINGS from the NWS:

Severe Weather Threat Continues For Baton Rouge

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a PDS Tornado Watch for the entire WBRZ Viewing area until 8 PM tonight.  A PDS Tornado watch means that there is a higher risk for strong and long-track tornadoes across the watch area. Round 1 of the storms was really uneventful this morning, but Round 2 will have a much stronger punch to it this afternoon and into the evening.  We will stay very warm and humid with low-level clouds zooming by from south to north. This will make it VERY windy.  The strong cold front will move closer to Baton Rouge during the afternoon and evening.  Individual thunderstorms will form ahead of the front and an eastward moving squall line.  These individual storms could easily rotate and produce tornadoes along with wind damage.  Then the squall line of storms will move into Baton Rouge, and it will likely produce damaging winds in excess of 75 mph along with a few more tornadoes.  This is all forecast to move through the City of Baton Rouge bet

Severe Weather Outbreak Expected on this Christmas Day

...A Significant Severe Weather Outbreak is expected on this Christmas Day... My analysis of the current weather around Baton Rouge shows that it is warm and becoming humid.  A warm front has moved north of Baton Rouge this morning and it will continue to push northward into Mississippi.   We have some very unstable conditions over us, and it will remain that way throughout the day. This is the recipe for Round 1 of thunderstorms to pop-up, and they will likely become strong to severe.  The threats will be damaging winds and tornadoes, yes, tornadoes are possible today.  Some of them could be significant according to SPC.  That means they could be as strong as EF-2!  SPC has the Baton Rouge area and much of the WBRZ viewing area in a Moderate Risk for severe weather today!  There is also a threat for some of the storms to have large hail and continue heavy rain. Then there will likely be a lull in the weather around midday.  It is likely that the sun will come out, but DO NO

Severe Weather Outbreak Possible On Christmas Day

...A Significant Severe Weather Outbreak Is Possible For The Baton Rouge Area On Christmas Day... Looking at the latest forecast models and analyzing the current weather situation, it is my thinking that we will have the threat for strong to severe storms around Southeast Louisiana starting early on Christmas Morning and continuing into the evening hours. Currently, there is a stalled front over the I-10 corridor and it might only drift a little more to the south overnight.  Then it is forecast to move back to the north as a warm front early on Christmas Morning.  As this happens, we will see an additional surge of warm and humid air coming up from the Gulf of Mexico.  At the same time, some strong upper-level winds will move over Baton Rouge along with an area of low pressure that will move to the NE out of Texas into Central LA.  We could see some strong to severe storms popping up starting anywhere between 3-6 AM.  These storms will be capable of rotating and tornadoes could f

Possible Strong to Severe Storms on Christmas Eve and Day for Baton Rouge

I've been looking at the latest forecast models for Christmas Eve and Day.  Unfortunately, it looks like a strong cold front will move into and through Baton Rouge with some rough weather. Ahead of the front we will become very warm and humid at the surface thanks to a warm front that will move from the Gulf northward over us (This is the same cold front that will move through Baton Rouge on Sunday Night/Monday Morning.  It will stall along the coast on Monday.).  Plenty of energy will also be moving over us aloft.  All of this means we will have a very unstable environment in place which is favorable for strong to severe thunderstorms to develop.  Any storms that develop ahead of the front will be capable of becoming supercells and that means they could rotate thanks to some strong wind shear aloft.  This would mean the storms could produce tornadoes, damaging winds and large hail starting on late Christmas Eve Night into Christmas Day Morning.  Everyone should be prepared for s

Pretty cold tonight with warmer weather this weekend

Short Term Forecast :  It will be a clear and chilly evening across the Capital City with temperatures falling from the 50s into the 40s. Get ready for some very cold temperatures tonight!  The skies will be clear and the winds will be calm.  This will allow the mercury to drop into the lower 30s.  A light freeze is expected, so be sure to cover or bring in any plants!  Also, have a warm place for your outdoor pets too! Weekend Forecast :  It will be a cold start to Saturday, but we will start to warm up.  The area of high pressure will move right over Baton Rouge and that will give us plenty of sunshine.  High temperatures will be in the mid 60s.  Saturday Night will be mostly clear and not as chilly with lows in the mid 40s. The weather will start to change on Sunday as southerly winds will be over the state.  This will keep us warm  and it will become partly to mostly cloudy.  A spotty shower is also possible.  Highs will be in the upper 60s.  Sunday Night will be mostly cloud

Turning much colder tonight & on Friday

Short Term Forecast :  The cold front is located to the east of Louisiana.  In its wake, we have brisk weather around Baton Rouge.  That means it is chilly/cold and breezy.  It will stay that way all evening with temperatures falling out of the 50s and into the 40s. The winds will weaken tonight and it is going to be COLD!  Expect clear skies with lows in the lower 30s.  A light freeze can be expected.  However, if the winds take longer to weaken, then we may not get to freezing.  Bundle up! Friday is going to be a beautiful day with sunny skies, but it will be chilly as an area of high pressure sits over Louisiana.  Highs will only get into the mid 50s.  Friday Night will be clear and very cold!  Lows will be in the lower 30s with a light freeze expected.  Some areas north and east of town may get down into the upper 20s. Weekend Forecast :  The area of high pressure will remain over us on Saturday, but it will become a little warmer with sunny skies.  Highs will be in the l

A cold front could bring us some strong storms tonight

Short Term Forecast :  We will be warm and breezy this evening with mostly cloudy skies.  Temperatures will be falling out of the 70s into the 60s. A strong cold front will race across Texas and into Louisiana tonight.  There will be scattered showers and thunderstorms ahead and along the cold front.  Some of these storms could be strong to severe overnight.  SPC has us in a Slight Risk for severe weather.  The main threats would be damaging winds and a few tornadoes.  It is likely that a broken squall line of thunderstorms will move through along the cold front and that is where we could get some severe weather.  Additionally, any storms that form ahead of the line could also become strong to severe.  Needless to say, I will be watching these for you.  Low temperatures will be pretty mild as they only fall to the lower 60s. Rest of the Week :  The cold front will move through Baton Rouge on Thursday Morning.  As mentioned above, some of the storms could be strong to sever

Warmer tomorrow before a strong cold front on Thursday

Short Term Forecast :  We will have a very pleasant and comfortable evening across the Baton Rouge area.  It will be clear with temperatures falling into the 50s. The clear skies will persist tonight, but it will not be as chilly thanks to southerly winds ushering in some warmer air.  Lows will fall to around 50. Week Ahead :  Wednesday will be another nice day, but it is going to be the transition day between the sunny  weather we had today and the stormy weather forecast for Thursday.  It is going to be sunny in the morning with clouds increasing during the afternoon making it partly cloudy.  We will be warm and humid with highs in the upper 70s.  Wednesday Night will be mostly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms popping up ahead of a strong cold front.  Lows will be in the lower 60s. The cold front will move into and through Baton Rouge on Thursday Morning.  Some of the storms could be strong to severe.  SPC has us in a Slight Risk for severe weather.  There

Clear skies are on the way tonight and on Tuesday

Short Term Forecast :  The cold front has moved to the east of Baton Rouge and the skies have become clear.  You can actually see the clearing line very well on the satellite imagery and from the view pictures we have received...thanks for those!  This means it will be clear and turning chilly tonight with lows in the lower 40s.  You will want your jacket tomorrow morning! Tuesday is shaping up to be a gorgeous day with plenty of sunny skies and comfortable temperatures.  We will stay warm in the wake of this front with a high in the lower 70s. Tuesday Night will be clear and still a little chilly with lows in the upper 40s. Week Ahead :  Wednesday is going to be the transition day between the sunny weather on Tuesday and stormy weather on Thursday Morning.  We will start the day with clear skies, but clouds will be on the increase during the afternoon.  It will be warmer and a little more humid as southerly winds transport in moisture from the Gulf.  Highs will be in the upper 70

Severe Weather Threat in Baton Rouge Today & Tonight

There is a threat for severe weather across the WBRZ viewing area starting late this morning and it will continue into Monday Morning.  This is not expected to be a widespread severe weather event, but don't let that fool you.  Last Monday we did not have a widespread event, but we we had 2 tornadoes - 1 in Baker, LA and 1 in Gonzales, LA.  Do not take this lightly!  Even through some of you will not have any severe weather, you should still be prepared and alert just in case.  This is our severe weather season in Baton Rouge, so severe weather is common. A disturbance, or short wave, will move across the ARKLAMIS area later this morning and into the afternoon.  This will tap into an unstable environment and will allow for scattered to numerous showers and storms to develop.  Some of these storms could be strong to severe.  The threats would be damaging winds and possibly a few tornadoes.  The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has almost all of Louisiana in a Slight Risk for seve

Warmer today with wet weather this weekend

Short Term Forecast :  Once again it is a very cold start to the day across the Capital City!  We have clear skies with temperatures in the lower to mid 30s.  Some patchy frost is possible around town.  Be sure to bundle up as you head out the door!  You will probably not need your jacket later today as some warmer air returns to the area.  High pressure will be located to the northeast of Louisiana and that will allow southeasterly winds to usher in the warm air from the Gulf of Mexico.  We will also see clouds increasing all day from the west.  Therefore, we will be partly cloudy with highs in the upper 60s. Expect mostly cloudy skies tonight and it will not be as cold.  Low temperatures will only fall to the mid 50s.  It is not bad for any Christmas parties that may be going on tonight!  Weekend Forecast :  The weather will be going down hill all weekend.  We will have mostly cloudy skies on Saturday ahead of a cold front.  This front will stall along the I-20

It is going to still be cold tonight, but we will stay above freezing with clear skies.  Low temperatures will dip into the upper 30s. Much calmer and colder weather today in Baton Rouge

Short Term Forecast :  The cold front that brought us the severe weather yesterday is well off to the east of Louisiana.  In the wake of it, we have mostly clear to partly cloudy skies and much colder temperatures in the upper 30s to lower 40s.  Bundle up as you head out today! Some mid to high level clouds will stream over Baton Rouge area today from the southwest to the northeast as upper-level moisture moves over the colder air sitting over us.  This will give us partly to mostly cloudy skies and some filtered sunshine.  The clouds will keep the high temperatures down as we will only climb into the lower 50s. The clouds will linger over the Deep South tonight and it will be pretty cold.  Low temperatures will drop into the mid 30s.  BRRR!!!  Week Ahead :  Expect to see more clouds over the city on Wednesday, but we will have a little more sunshine peaking through.  This will make it a mix of sun and clouds for the forecast.  It will stay cool with highs in the upp

Warm weather this weekend and turning colder next week

This Evening/Tonight :  It is going to be a pleasant evening across the Capital City with partly cloudy skies and temperatures falling to the 60s. More clouds with some rain today in Baton Rouge

Short Term Forecast :  This Thursday Morning is starting out with mostly cloudy skies, some patchy fog and some drizzle.  Temperatures are in the 60s. It is going to be another somewhat gloomy day thanks to the low pressure system in the Northern Gulf of Mexico and a weak disturbance that is moving across the Gulf States.  This will lead to mostly cloudy skies with some isolated showers/drizzle today.  It will be warmer with highs in the lower 70s. Some clouds will stick around tonight making it partly cloudy and we will have some patchy fog.  Lows will be in the upper 50s. Friday will be a much nicer day with more sunshine.  Expect partly cloudy skies with highs in the mid 70s.  Friday Night will have some cloud cover and patchy fog.  Lows will be in the mid 50s. Another rainy and dreary day in Baton Rouge

Short Term Forecast :  We start this Wednesday Morning with mostly cloudy skies and isolated to scattered showers.  It is mild with temperatures in the 60s. Expect another dreary and rainy afternoon across the Capital City.  The cold front and a disturbance will slowly push through town and set off more scattered showers and a few thunderstorms.  There could be some heavy rain at times.  Otherwise, it will be mostly cloudy and warm with a high around 70.  Some of you may not even get that warm.  The clouds and a few spotty showers will continue tonight.  It will be a little cooler with lows in the lower 50s. Rest of the Week :  The cold front will dissipate over Southeast Louisiana by tomorrow.  This will not allow any cooler air to follow behind it, so we will stay warm and humid.  That means we will keep the clouds around along with a few stray showers during the afternoon.  High temperatures will be in the mid 70s.  Thursday Night will be partly cloudy with lows in

More rain and storms in Baton Rouge through tonight

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are moving through Baton Rouge right now and they will continue into Wednesday Morning.  They are ahead of a cold front that will move through town on Wednesday.  Some of the storms could be strong to possibly severe at times with gusty winds around 40 mph, heavy rain and small hail.  Fortunately, only a few storms are expected to get strong. Rainfall could total around 1-3 inches across Southeast Louisiana.  Most of you will likely get around an inch of rain.  Those that get more could see some minor flooding in areas that typically hold water.  Since it has been very dry lately, the ground will be able to suck up a lot of the rain.
