Sunny and pleasant weather today

Short Term Forecast :  It is a clear, calm and cold start to this Thursday.  Temperatures are in the mid to upper 30s.  Some patchy frost is possible in areas north and east of Baton Rouge.  Be sure to take that jacket with you as you head out to work and school! We will have a gorgeous afternoon thanks to high pressure building in behind the cold front that came through yesterday.  This will provide us with sunny skies and cool temperatures in the lower 60s.  You can expect another pretty chilly night across the Capital City.  We will be clear with low temperatures in the mid 30s.  Some patchy frost is possible.  Friday will be another delightful day with mostly sunny skies.  A dry cold front will move across the state, but it will only bring a few clouds with it.  We will stay cool with a high in the lower 60s.  That is the temperature is it supposed to be this time of year.  Friday Night will be mostly clear and still chilly with lows near 40. The severe weather threat has ended for Baton Rouge

The cold front has pushed through town this morning, and the severe weather threat has ended.  Some lingering showers will continue until midday for parts of Southeast Louisiana.  The sky will start to clear and it will become partly cloudy this afternoon.  Temperatures have fallen into the 50s and they will hold steady through the afternoon hours.  Then they will fall into the 40s during the evening.  Be sure to take that jacket with you today. Expect mostly clear skies tonight with much colder temperatures.  Lows will fall to the mid 30s.  Brrr!  Be sure to bundle up on Thursday Morning! Gorgeous weather returns on Thursday and Friday as an area of high pressure builds over the Southeast U.S.  We will be sunny and cool with highs in the upper 50s to lower 60s each day.  It will be cold at night with lows in the 30s. Have a good day! -Dave

Strong to severe storms possible this morning!

Short Term Forecast :  A strong cold front will move into Baton Rouge this morning.  It will set off showers and thunderstorms.  Some could be strong to severe at times with the threat of damaging winds and a few tornadoes.  SPC has us in a Slight Risk for severe weather this morning.  Temperatures will be in the lower 70s, but will fall once the rain starts. This will be the high temperature for the day. The cold front is expected to push through town by midday and then we will see an end to the rain and storms.  The sky will start to clear and it will become partly cloudy.  We will also see the temperatures drop quickly through the 60s and into the 50s by the evening.  Expect mostly clear skies tonight with much colder temperatures.  Lows will fall to the mid 30s.  Brrr!  Be sure to bundle up on Thursday Morning! Rest of the Week :  High pressure will build over the Southeast on Thursday and Friday.  This will make it sunny and keep us cool.  Highs will be in

Will we have any strong to severe thunderstorms tonight in Baton Rouge?

Yes, there is a threat for strong to severe thunderstorms across the Baton Rouge area tonight.  This is due to a strong cold front and a trough of low pressure that will pass across the state.  Ahead of the cold front it is very unseasonably warm, humid and breezy.  Moisture is being drawn up from the Gulf of Mexico into the front and that is helping to fuel the storms.   Currently, thunderstorms are developing across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri, and they are building southward.  A squall-line is expected to form across Texas and move into Louisiana after Midnight tonight.  The line is forecast to arrive in Baton Rouge between 3 to 7 AM.  Any storms ahead of and along the line could be strong to severe.  The main threat will be damaging winds in excess of 60 mph.  However, there is also a tornado threat due to the strong wind shear and turning of the winds aloft over the city.   All of this has prompted SPC to put all of South Louisiana in a Slight Risk for severe w

Strong to severe storms possible tonight

Short Term Forecast :  We start this Tuesday with some very unseasonably warm temperatures in the mid 60s under mostly cloudy skies.  Get ready for a very warm, humid and breeze afternoon across the Baton Rouge area.  This is all in response to a strong cold front that will move through tonight.  Ahead of this front we have strong southerly winds that will pump in plenty of Gulf Moisture over us.  This will keep us mostly cloudy and allow for some isolated showers to pop-up with high temperatures in the upper 70s. The weather will go downhill tonight just ahead and along the cold front.  Scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop along a pre-frontal trough of low pressure.  Some of these could be strong to severe with damaging winds and even a few tornadoes.  Then late tonight and early on Wednesday Morning a squall-line of storms will move through Baton Rouge.  The storms along this line could be strong to severe with a good threat of damaging winds and a fe

A warm start to the week with changes on the way

Short Term Forecast :  It is a very mild start to the day with temperatures in the upper 50s to lower 60s under mostly cloudy skies.  Patchy fog has also been reported around town.  Watch out for some low visibilities!  We will continue to have the very unseasonably warm weather today as an area of high pressure sits off to the east of Louisiana.  We have southerly winds pumping in the warm and humid air from the Gulf.  We will have a mix of sun and clouds today with highs in the upper 70s.  Another mild night is on tap with mostly cloudy skies and patchy fog.  Low temperatures will only fall to the lower 60s. Week Ahead :  The weather will start to change on Tuesday.  A strong cold front will move toward Louisiana during the day.  We will have partly to mostly cloudy skies ahead of it with some isolated showers popping up.  It will stay very warm and humid with highs in the upper 70s.  Tuesday Night will likely have some rough weather.  The cold front will mov

Staying unseasonably warm all weekend

Short Term Forecast :  Clouds are moving through Baton Rouge this morning making it partly to mostly cloudy.  This is ahead of a cold front that is stalling just north of Baton Rouge.  It is a mild start to the day with temperatures in the mid 50s. The cold front is expected to stall across the Upper Florida Parishes later today and sit there into Saturday.  This means we will have a mix of sun and clouds with a slight chance of a shower.  Most of you will not see any rain since the front is very weak.  We will continue to be warm and humid with highs in the mid 70s. Expect partly to mostly cloudy skies tonight with patchy fog.  Lows will be in the upper 50s. Weekend Forecast :  The front will not move much on Saturday.  This will allow us to continue to see partly to mostly cloudy skies with the warm air.  High temperatures will climb into the lower 70s.  However, if the front would move just a little more toward Baton Rouge we could be a few degrees cooler.  T

Spring-like weather has arrived

Short Term Forecast :  It is not as cold this morning across the Capital City.  We have mostly clear skies with temperatures in the upper 40s to lower 50s. The Spring-like weather has arrived!  The area of high pressure is located to the east of Louisiana and that is allowing southerly winds to pump-up the warm/humid air from the Gulf.  This will lead to partly cloudy skies this afternoon with high temperatures in the mid 70s. The mild temperatures will continue tonight with mostly cloudy skies.  Patchy dense fog is also anticipated.  Low temperatures will only fall to the mid 50s.  That is about 15 degrees warmer than we should be this time of year at night! Friday will continue to be warm and humid with a mix of sun and clouds.  A spotty shower will also be possible as a cold front stalls just to the north of Baton Rouge.  High temperatures are going to be in the mid 70s.  Friday Night will be mostly cloudy with patchy fog and lows in the upper 50s. Weekend

Warmer temperatures arrive today

Short Term Forecast :  You will still need that light jacket this morning as the chilly air is sticking around Baton Rouge for the moment.  We have clear skies with temperatures in the upper 30s to lower 40s. Much warmer temperatures will arrive this afternoon and you will not need that jacket anymore.  The area of high pressure that was sitting over us yesterday will move east of Louisiana.  This will shift the winds from the east to the southeast and that will allow us to warm up.  We will still be sunny with high temperatures in the lower 70s. It is not going to be as chilly tonight with mostly clear skies.  Lows will drop into the upper 40s. Rest of the Week :  The warm air will continue to be pumped in from the Gulf over us on Thursday and it will become a little more humid too with partly cloudy skies.  Highs will be in the mid 70s.  Thursday Night will be partly cloudy with some patchy fog.  Lows will be in the mid 50s. The forecast has now completely ch

Jupiter and the Moon

Did you see the Moon and Jupiter right next to it last night way up in the sky?  It was visible all around Baton Rouge between the clouds, and a pretty cool sight.  Here are the details and a picture of it from our viewer Neil Stuntz:

Cooler today with warmer weather arriving tomorrow

Short Term Forecast :  We have a chilly start to this Tuesday with partly to mostly cloudy skies.  Temperatures are in the lower 40s.  High pressure will build over Louisiana today in the wake of the cold front that moved through last night.  We will see a gradual decrease in the cloud cover with mostly sunny skies expected this afternoon.  It will be a cooler day with highs in the lower 60s. Look for mostly clear skies and chilly temperatures down to the lower 40s tonight. Week Ahead :  The area of high pressure will move to the east of Louisiana on Wednesday.  This will shift the winds from the northeast to the east and then to the southeast.  That will allow us to warm back up!  We will have mostly sunny skies with highs in the upper 60s.  Wednesday Night will be mostly clear and a little chilly with lows in the upper 40s.  Thursday will be even warmer with partly cloudy skies and highs in the lower 70s.  Thursday Night is going to have partly to mostly clou

A mild day with cooler temperatures tomorrow

Short Term Forecast :  We have a mostly clear to partly cloudy start to this Monday as some high clouds stream over South Louisiana.  It is a little chilly with temperatures in the upper 30s to lower 40s.  You will want to take that jacket with you this morning. A cold front will move into and through Baton Rouge today.  This front will not have any moisture to work with, so we will not have any rain this afternoon.  Just look for those high clouds to continue to move over Baton Rouge.  We will have a mild day with highs in the mid 60s. There will still be a few clouds lingering around tonight, so expect mostly clear skies.  It will still be a bit chilly with lows in the upper 30s. Week Ahead :  High pressure will build in behind the front on Tuesday.  This will give us mostly sunny skies and some cooler temperatures too.  Highs will be around 60.  Tuesday Night will be clear and chilly with lows in the upper 30s. The high pressure will start to move to the e

Gorgeous weather today and all weekend

Short Term Forecast :  It is a clear and chilly start to this Friday with temperatures in the mid 30s.  Be sure to take that warm coat with you this morning! We will have a gorgeous afternoon across the Capital City!  An area of high pressure has built in over the Southeast U.S. behind the snowstorm that rolled through north of us yesterday.  This will make it sunny and a little cool with highs in the upper 50s. The chilly temperatures will continue tonight with clear skies.  Lows will dip into the mid 30s.  Better bundle up tonight if you are going out on the town! Weekend Forecast :  The sunshine will stay in the forecast each day.  There will be a cold front that will move into Louisiana on Sunday Night, but it will not have any rain associated with it.  We will just see a few clouds on Saturday and Sunday.   It will become a little warmer each day since the high pressure will be located to the east of Louisiana. High temperatures will be in the mid 60s an

The sunshine finally returns today!

Short Term Forecast :  It looks like the wintry weather will remain north of Baton Rouge this morning.  We did have some reports of a rain/snow mix last night, but it did not last long.  We have partly to mostly cloudy skies on this Thursday Morning and there is a slight chance we could see a few flurries.  However, the greatest chance will be around McComb, MS where they have been reporting light snow for a few hours!!  Temperatures are in the lower to mid 30s around town. We will finally see a return to the sunshine this afternoon.  The upper-level low that is causing the winter storm across parts of the Deep South will move east of Louisiana.  In the wake of that we will have an area of high pressure build in.  This will make it sunny and still cool thanks to the northerly winds associated with it.  High temperatures will be in the lower to mid 50s. Expect clear skies tonight with a light freeze as the lows dip into the lower 30s. Friday is going to be a gorgeous

Is there a chance of snow tonight in Baton Rouge?

Many of you have been asking...is there a chance of snow in Baton Rouge tonight??  Well I have analyzed the latest forecast models and it seems like the rain/mist will be coming to an end around the same time the freezing temperatures arrive in Baton Rouge.  There is plenty of cold air aloft, but the surface temperatures will be at or just above 32 degrees.  With all of this in mind, it looks like we could see a few snow flurries after 10 PM tonight to early on Thursday Morning in Baton Rouge.  Accumulating snow is not expected in Baton Rouge at this time.  However, as you travel north into the Upper Florida Parishes and into McComb, MS there is a better chance of seeing some snow, and even some minor accumulation of snow.  There could be a light coating on the grassy surfaces up there.  See the graphic below: Also, I would watch out for some icy spots on roads that do not dry out overnight - mainly on bridges and overpasses all around the Baton Rouge area. Another cold and rainy day, but changes are coming

Short Term Forecast :  This Wednesday Morning is starting off with mostly cloudy skies and scattered showers across Southeast Louisiana.  It is chilly with temperatures in the mid 30s.  Better bundle up and take that umbrella with you again! More of the same wet and dreary weather is on tap today.  The stationary front is still in place along the Louisiana and Mississippi Coasts.  This means we will still have plenty of clouds and scattered showers.  The bulk of the rain will come before noon with only spotty showers later in the day.  It will be a cold day with highs only in the lower 40s. A cold upper-level low will move across Texas and into Louisiana overnight.  This will bring us some freezing temperatures just as the rain ends.  Therefore, I am not expecting any wintry precipitation here in Baton Rouge.  There may be a sleet pellet or two near McComb, MS on Thursday Morning, but that would be it.  We will be partly cloudy overnight as the rain comes to an en

The wet, chilly and dreary weather continues

Short Term Forecast :  It is another cold and rainy morning across the Capital City.  We have mostly cloudy skies with scattered showers popping up on the radar.  Temperatures are in the upper 30s to lower 40s. More of the same wet, chilly and dreary weather is on tap this afternoon.  This is all thanks to the stationary front that is sitting along the Louisiana and Mississippi Coasts.  Winds are paralleling the front, and that is preventing it from drifting to the east.  Disturbances are coming out of the southwest to the northeast in the upper-levels and they are helping to set off the scattered showers over Baton Rouge.  Some of the rain could become heavy at times.  We will stay chilly with highs in the mid 40s.  The clouds and showers will continue tonight.  It will be a cold one with lows in the upper 30s. Week Ahead :  Do not expect much of a change in the weather on Wednesday since the front will still be stuck along the coast.  Some of the rain could ge

The soggy weather pattern continues

Short Term Forecast :  We start this Monday Morning with more scattered showers and some heavy rain.  It is pretty chilly with temperatures in the lower 40s.  Better take your warm coat and umbrella with you today! The showers and a few thunderstorms will continue this afternoon thanks to a stationary front that is sitting along the Louisiana and Mississippi Coasts.  Upper-level winds are coming out of the southwest and that is drawing up moisture from the Pacific and Gulf.  Additionally, disturbances are moving along the front and all of this is leading to another wet afternoon.  Some heavy rain will be possible that will continue to cause some flooding.  It will be a chilly day with high temperatures in the upper 40s. The showers will continue tonight and it will be cold with lows in the upper 30s. River Stages :  Due to the heavy rain we had last week, and the additional rains expected this week, the rivers are expected to stay high and flood.  For the latest i

More clouds with some light rain today

Short Term Forecast :  We start off this Recycle Your Electronics Day Friday with cloudy skies and some light rain/drizzle.  Temperatures are in the 60s. The heavy rain event is over, but we will still have to deal with some lingering light rain showers today.  This is due to the cold front falling apart over Louisiana today.  Expect mostly cloudy skies when we do not have any light rain.  It will be a warmer day with highs in the lower to mid 70s.  The clouds will continue to stick around tonight along with some light drizzle.  Patchy fog is also possible. Lows will be in the mid 60s. Weekend Forecast :  Saturday is going to be a pretty dry day according to the latest forecast models.  I can't totally take rain out of the forecast since that dissipating front will still be located over Baton Rouge.  Therefore, you can expect mostly cloudy skies with spotty showers.  It will be warm and humid with highs in the upper 70s.  Saturday Night will be mostly cloudy

More heavy rain with some severe weather today

...Tornado Watch Until Noon Today... ...Flash Flood Watch Through This Afternoon... Short Term Forecast :  This morning is starting out with just mostly cloudy skies and a few showers.  However, that will change later in the morning as a line of heavy rain and thunderstorms moves into Baton Rouge.  Temperatures are in the upper 60s. The line of heavy rain and thunderstorms will slowly move through Baton Rouge through the afternoon and into the evening hours.  Some of the storms could be strong to severe with damaging winds and a few tornadoes.  SPC has issued a Tornado Watch for much of the Baton Rouge area until 2 PM today.  We could pick up an additional 2-4 inches or more of rain today.  The NWS is continuing the Flash Flood Watch through this afternoon.  Flash flooding is likely so watch for quickly rising water on streams, creeks, roads and area rivers! This is all due to a slow moving cold front and an area of low pressure.  Since it will be warm and h
