Cooler today, but becoming much colder this weekend

Short Term Forecast :  The cold front has moved into the Gulf of Mexico and we have mostly clear skies over Baton Rouge this morning.  It is chilly with temperatures in the 40s. It is going to be another beautiful afternoon with plenty of sunshine.  A few high clouds will stream by today and that will make it mostly sunny to partly cloudy at times.  We will be much cooler than yesterday with highs only around 60.  Mainly clear skies will greet us tonight along with some cold temperatures.  Lows will dip into the mid 30s.  Brrr!  Better dress warmly on Friday Morning!  Friday will start out pretty cold and it is not going to warm up much.  Another cold front will move into Baton Rouge and that will bring in some partly cloudy skies.  High temperatures will be in the upper 50s.  The cold front will move through Baton Rouge on Friday Night into Saturday Morning.  We will be partly cloudy and very cold with lows in the lower 30s.  A light freeze will be possible!  Be s

Warmer today, but cooler weather is on the way

Short Term Forecast :  We begin this Wednesday Morning with mostly clear to partly cloudy skies across Southeast Louisiana.  Temperatures are a little chilly as they sit in the lower to mid 40s.  Be sure to wear that jacket this morning!  We will become warmer this afternoon as a cold front moves in from the north.  This front will not have much moisture to work with, so I am only expecting partly cloudy skies to develop with no rain.  High temperatures will be in the upper 60s.  The cold front will move through Baton Rouge by tonight and we will become mostly clear overnight.  It is going to turn colder with lows near 40.  Rest of the Week :  Another dry day is on tap for Thursday with mostly sunny skies.  It will stay cool in the wake of the front with highs only around 60.  Thursday Night is forecast to be clear and colder with lows in the mid 30s.  Expect another front/trough of low pressure to move across the Southeast U.S. on Friday.  Once again it wi

Sunshine Returns With Cooler Temperatures Today

Short Term Forecast :  The cold front is now located off to the east of Louisiana.  The clouds have decreased and we have a mostly clear to partly cloudy start to the day.  It has turned cooler too with temperatures in the 40s.  You may want to take that jacket with you today. An area of high pressure will briefly sit over us today and that will give us mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies.  Cooler and breezy westerly winds will keep the temperatures down this afternoon.  Winds will be out of the west at 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts.  Highs will only be in the lower 60s and some of you will not get out of the upper 50s.  Expect mostly clear skies tonight and it will be chilly.  Fortunately, the winds will not be a breezy, so it will not feel too cold.  Low temperatures will be in the lower 40s.  Needless to say, it will still be jacket weather. Tornado Watch for Entire WBRZ Viewing Area Until 8 PM

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a Tornado Watch for all of the WBRZ Viewing area until 8 PM tonight. Thunderstorms are developing once again as a warm front moves up from the Louisiana Coast into Baton Rouge.  These storms could become supercells (rotating thunderstorms) and will likely be strong to severe with large hail, damaging winds and even a few tornadoes. Click here for any warnings that pop-up this afternoon and evening. Keep it tuned to WBRZ, WBRZ Weather Channel and my Facebook and Twitter feeds for any updates or warnings.  -Dave

Tornado Watch Likely To Be Issued for Much of Louisiana SOON

Things are starting to change with the weather across Louisiana and in Baton Rouge.  A warm front will move up from the Gulf of Mexico and this will bring in warm/humid air.  That will make the atmosphere very unstable, and thunderstorms will start to pop-up.  Also, a strong cold front will move in from the west later today and that will also set off plenty of storms.  These storms are expected to be severe with large hail, damaging winds and a few tornadoes. We could have large hail like was seen last night around the New Orleans area...1"+ in size!  Winds could be 60 mph or greater, and there will be enough sheer in place to rotate storms leading to possible tornado development. Due to all of that, SPC is planning on issuing a Tornado Watch for much of Louisiana SOON.  This will likely go into the evening hours.   Please keep it tuned to WBRZ, WBRZ Weather Channel and my Facebook and Twitter feeds for additional information on the threat for severe weather today!

More Severe Weather Expected Today

Short Term Forecast :  After a very active night with part 1 of severe weather, we start this Monday with scattered showers and a few thunderstorms.  Otherwise, it is mostly cloudy and mild with temperatures in the 60s. A warm front will move northward from the Louisiana Coast through Baton Rouge and into Mississippi by the early afternoon, and this will be part 2 of severe weather.  This will allow very warm and humid air to come up from the Gulf of Mexico, and it will be breezy with some sunshine peaking out.  All of this will make the atmosphere very unstable, and that will allow scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms to develop again all afternoon.  Some of them are expected to be strong to severe at times!   SPC has put all of Louisiana in a Slight Risk for severe weather today.  The threats will be large hail, damaging winds and a few tornadoes.  Click on the map to the right to read more about the severe weather threat.  We will also have more heavy rain

Severe Weather Possible Late Tonight & On Monday

The old cold front that brought us the rain and storms last week will come back north as a warm front tonight/Monday Morning.  As this happens, another cold front will move in from the west.  We will become very unstable as the warm and humid air is ushered in from the Gulf, and it will become breezy too.  All of this will allow scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms to pop-up.  The rain & storms will start this evening, but will become much more widespread on Monday.  There may be some breaks in the rain & storms, but it is not expected to come to an end until Monday Night. Any of the storms that develop could become strong to severe!  This severe weather event looks to be stronger than the last few and we could have a possible outbreak!!  That means we could have more widespread severe weather verses just a small threat.  The reason is that we will be much more unstable and more severe weather variables will be in place this time.  The  SPC has us in a Slight Ri

Severe Storms Around Baton Rouge & SE LA Tonight

Showers and thunderstorms are popping up across Southeast Louisiana tonight.  They are quickly developing and can be strong to severe.  A front is stalled along the Louisiana Coast and disturbances are riding along it.  These disturbances are making the atmosphere unstable and that is setting off the storms.   The main threats will be large hail and damaging winds.  Hail will be around quarter to half-dollar size.  Also, there will be a lot of lightning with any storm.   If a severe storm moves over your area be sure to get indoors immediately!  Stay away from windows and watch out for large hail! Keep it tuned to WBRZ, WBRZ Weather Channel and my Facebook & Twitter feeds for additional updates! -Dave

More rain today, but drier this weekend

Short Term Forecast :  It is a mostly cloudy Friday Morning across the Baton Rouge area.  There are isolated showers moving through town as well.  Temperatures are in the upper 50s to lower 60s. The cold front will stall along the Louisiana Coast today.  An area of low pressure will move along it, and this will help to set off scattered showers with a few thunderstorms today.  We will not be washed out, but you will have to dodge rain at times.  Some of the rain could be heavy.  High temperatures will be in the upper 60s. The clouds along with a few showers will be in the forecast tonight.  Low temperatures will be in the lower 50s. Weekend Forecast :  The cold front will get nudged to the east of Louisiana on Saturday.  This will put an end to the rain briefly and make it partly cloudy.  Overall, we will have some decent weather tomorrow.  High temperatures will be in the upper 60s.  Saturday Night will be partly cloudy and chilly with lows in the mid 40s. Short Term Forecast :  It is a pretty quiet Thursday Morning across the Capital City.  We have mostly cloudy skies and it is a little breezy with temperatures in the upper 40s to lower 50s. The weather will be going downhill by lunchtime today.  A warm front will move up from the Gulf of Mexico, and this will usher in warm and humid air.  This will make the atmosphere unstable and breezy.  The NWS has issued a Wind Advisory for parts of the WBRZ Viewing area as the winds will be around 15 to 25 mph and have gusts to 30+ mph.  At the same time, scattered showers and thunderstorms will be developing around Baton Rouge.  These storms will increase in coverage throughout the afternoon ahead of a strong cold front.  Some of the storms could become strong to severe.  Some of them could have large hail over 1", damaging winds over 60 mph and even a few tornadoes.  SPC has put all of Louisiana in a Slight Risk for severe weather today.  High temperatures will climb into

Quiet weather today, but storms return on Thursday

Short Term Forecast :  We have some partly to mostly cloudy skies on this Wednesday Morning.  It is a little chilly with temperatures in the 40s. The clouds will continue to thicken during the day and that will make it mostly cloudy.  This is due to a developing area of low pressure and a strong cold front over Texas/New Mexico.  Temperatures will be held down thanks to the cloud cover as we only climb into the lower 60s.  Some areas may not make it out of the 50s today.  More clouds are expected tonight and it will become breezy.  Low temperatures will be in the upper 40s. School Visits :  Yesterday I had the pleasure of visiting Central Private School and speaking to the 8th graders.  We had a great time, and thank you so much for the hat!! Today will travel to Family Christian Academy to talk to the 4th and 5th graders.  I look forward to seeing you this afternoon! Week Ahead :  A warm front will move up from the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday Morning and this will

You can expect a very nice sunny afternoon across the Capital City!  High pressure will build in just north of Louisiana and it will push all the clouds out of here this afternoon.  We will be mild with high temperatures in the lower to mid 60s. The NWS in Slidell, LA has issued a  Freeze Warning from Midnight to 7 AM Sunday for Parishes along the I-12 corridor. This area has not had a freeze in weeks, so it is important to highlight the need to prepare for a freeze.   Areas south of I-10 will be close to 32, but should remain just about it.  Areas north of I-12 have had some recent freezes, so that is why they are not included in the warning.   What should you do?  Bring plants inside! River Flooding Expected Later This Week!

There has been some very heavy rain falling across Southern Mississippi since Sunday.  This is the Watershed for the Amite, Comite, Tickfaw and Tangipahoa Rivers.  Doppler radar rainfall estimates show anywhere from 3 to 8 inches of rain has fallen, and more is expected today.  This will cause the runoff to go into the river basins and flow down into Louisiana.   Right now the NWS has issued  River Flood Warnings  for the Amite River Basin as it is expected to rise above flood stage by the end of the week.  Moderate flooding is expected at this time!  Look for additional warnings to be issued during the next few days.   Keep an eye on those rivers as the water could rise quickly.  Make all preparations now!  If you experienced river flooding back in January  then I would plan on seeing flooding again!  Stay safe. Heavy Rain Expected On This Mardi Gras

Will area local rivers around Baton Rouge flood again this week?

The short answer is...VERY LIKELY!  There has been some very heavy rain falling across Southern Mississippi since Sunday.  This is the Watershed for the Amite, Comite, Tickfaw and Tangipahoa Rivers.  Doppler radar rainfall estimates show anywhere from 3 to 8 inches of rain has fallen.  This will cause the runoff to go into the river basins and flow down into Louisiana. Looking at the latest forecast river stages, it is possible that the Amite, Comite, Tickfaw & Tangipahoa Rivers will get to and above their respective flood stages by the end of the week!! The NWS has now issued River Flood Warnings for the Amite river!!  Look for additional river flood warnings for other local rivers! Please stay tuned for updates on this possible flooding situation in the next few days! Here are the charted projections from the Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service and the Lower Mississippi River Forecast Center:    Here is a map of the current river stages around the Baton Rouge a

Some Strong to Severe Storms Possible This Afternoon

There is a small threat for some strong to severe storms this afternoon across Southern Louisiana and Mississippi.  The atmosphere remains unstable behind a cold front that is now stalling along the Louisiana Coast.  This include the Baton Rouge area northward into Southern Mississippi. The storms could produce damaging winds and contain large hail around 1 inch or so. On top of the severe weather threat...we also have to watch out for some heavy rain today.  Rainfall totals are forecast to be around 2-4 inches between this morning and Tuesday Afternoon.  The NWS has a Flood Watch in effect through Tuesday Afternoon for all of Southeast Louisiana.  Watch for flash flooding and rising local rivers over the next few days. I will continue to watch these storms, and be sure to keep it tuned to WBRZ, WBRZ's Weather Channel, My Facebook and Twitter pages for additional updates! -Dave
