More Heat With Some Storms This Weekend

Short Term Forecast :  We have a very warm and humid morning across Southeast Louisiana with party cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid to upper 70s.  Some showers and storms have also developed along the coast. You can expect another very hot afternoon in Baton Rouge as the eastern edge of the upper-level ridge of high pressure is still influencing our weather.  Along this eastern edge will be a disturbance that will move from the Mid-West toward the Deep South.  This disturbance's outflow could help to set off a few showers and storms this afternoon.  However, most of you will remain dry.  High temperatures will be in the mid 90s with the heat index of 100 to 105. That disturbance will impact our weather tonight as it helps to send a cold front into Baton Rouge.  We will become mostly cloudy with isolated showers and storms developing late tonight.  Lows will be in the mid 70s. Weekend Forecast :  A trough of low pressure will be sitting over the Eastern U.S. all week

Hot With Little To No Rain Today

Short Term Forecast :  We have a warm and very muggy start to this Thursday with mostly clear skies.  Temperatures are in the lower to mid 70s. Expect a hotter afternoon as the upper-level ridge of high pressure, which is centered over the Four Corners Region of the U.S., remains over us.  This will limit the amount of storms we will see this afternoon.  It will be partly cloudy and hot with only spotty storms popping up.  Highs will be in the mid 90s and the heat index 100 to 105. It will be warm and very muggy again tonight with partly cloudy skies.  Low temperatures will only fall to the mid 70s. Friday will be a transition day from the somewhat drier weather to the return of afternoon pop-up storms.  This is due to the eastern edge of the ridge of high pressure eroding.  At the same time as cold front will slowly move down from the north toward Louisiana.  This will allow extra moisture to return and that will give us partly cloudy skies with isolated showers and thunderst

Hot With Only Stray Storms Today

Short Term Forecast :  It is a pretty quiet start to this Wednesday Morning across Southeast Louisiana.  We have mostly clear skies with temperatures in the 70s. Get ready for a hotter day thanks to a ridge of high pressure sitting over Baton Rouge in the upper-levels of the atmosphere.  This will warm up those levels and that will limit the amount of storms popping up.  Therefore, we will be partly cloudy, hot and humid with only stray thunderstorms.  High temperatures will be in the lower 90s with the heat index around 100. Look for some lingering clouds tonight and it will be steamy with lows in the mid 70s. Rest of the Week :  The ridge will remain over us on Thursday, so expect more hot weather with only a couple of storms possible.  It will be even hotter with highs in the mid 90s and the heat index 100 to 105.  Thursday Night will be partly cloudy and we could see a spotty shower popping up.  Lows will be in the mid 70s. The weather will start to change on Friday.  Th

Lightning Safety Awareness Week

The National Weather Service has named June 23-29th as Lightning Safety Awareness Week.  During this week the NWS will be sending out reminders on how to keep safe from lightning. Did you know that Louisiana is ranked #6 in the country for average lighting strikes between 1997-2011? It is behind Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Kansas.  That is according to the NWS/Vaisala.  However, Louisiana is ranked #2 in lightning flashes per square mile behind Florida. We can thank the Summer-time sea breeze for giving Florida and Louisiana all of the storms.  For more on these stats, check out this website . For more information on this week, check out the NWS's Lightning Safety Awareness Week website .

Hotter With A Few Storms Today

Short Term Forecast :  We have some mostly clear to partly cloudy skies across the Baton Rouge area this morning.  It is warm and humid with temperatures in the 70s. An upper-level  ridge of high pressure will be building over us today and that will limit the coverage and amount of thunderstorms we will have.  You can expect partly cloudy skies with only a few showers and thunderstorms.  It will be hotter with highs in the lower 90s. Any storms will dissipate tonight and we will have some clouds sticking around tonight.  It will be warm and humid with lows in the mid 70s. Week Ahead :  The ridge will be slowly moving to the west on Wednesday and Thursday.  This will keep us hot and humid with isolated showers and storms each day.  Some of you will not see any rain.  Highs will be in the lower to mid 90s.  Each night will have a few clouds with lows in the mid 70s. We will be on the eastern edge of the ridge on Friday.  This will allow us to have extra moisture moving up from

Scattered Showers and Storms Return Today

Short Term Forecast :  We start this Monday Morning with partly cloudy skies in the Baton Rouge area, but there are scattered showers and a few storms popping up along the Coastal Parishes.  These showers/storms are moving north/inland and will be into the Baton Rouge area during the mid-morning.  Temperatures are in the lower 70s. We will have a great chance of rain across Metro Baton Rouge today.  This is due to the rain starting earlier in the day and the sea breeze kicking in as well.  You can expect partly to mostly cloudy skies with scattered showers and thunderstorms.  Some storms could contain heavy rain at times.  High temperatures will be in the upper 80s to lower 90s.  You will be hotter if it takes longer for rain to get to your home. The showers and storms will dissipate inland tonight and we will have a couple of clouds hanging around.  The coastal areas will see some overnight showers and storms popping up again.  Lows temperatures will fall to the lower 70s. We

Isolated Storms Today With A Greater Chance of Storms This Weekend

Summer Solstice :  Summer officially arrived at 12:04 AM today.  This is typically known as the longest day of the year due to the maximum amount of sunlight expected.  We actually will have a few weeks of maximum amount of sunlight before the days start getting shorter. Short Term Forecast :  We have mostly clear skies across the Baton Rouge area this morning.  It is warm and muggy with temperatures in the 70s. An area of high pressure will be building across the Deep South today, but it will not take away the chance of storms this afternoon.  We will be partly cloudy and hot with isolated showers and storms.  High temperatures will be in the lower 90s and the heat index will be around 100. Any storms will dissipate by 10 PM tonight and then we will be left with a few clouds.  It will be pretty sticky with lows in the lower 70s. Weekend Forecast :  The area of high pressure will move to the east of Louisiana on Saturday and a weak disturbance will move toward the state from

Hotter With Only Isolated Storms Today

Short Term Forecast :  It is a much quieter morning compared to Wednesday!  We have partly cloudy skies with some patchy fog.  Temperatures are in the lower to mid 70s. We will not have as many storms as we did yesterday thanks to the upper-level disturbance (low pressure in the upper-levels of the atmosphere) moving to the east of Louisiana.  An area of high pressure is going to build over Louisiana and that will bring in some drier air aloft.  This will limit the amount of storms we will have during the heating of the day.  Therefore, expect partly cloudy skies with isolated showers and thunderstorms.  Highs will be in the lower 90s. Any rain/storms will dissipate by 10 PM and then we will be left with a few clouds.  It will be warm and muggy with lows in the lower 70s. Friday will be another hotter day with only a few pop-up afternoon storms as the drier air loft remains over Baton Rouge.  Highs will be in the lower 90s.  Friday Night will be partly cloudy and steamy with l

Hot With Scattered Thunderstorms Today

Short Term Forecast :  We begin this Wednesday Morning with mostly cloudy skies and isolated showers.  The rain is coming from a stalled cold front that is sitting over us and a disturbance that is moving along it.  Temperatures are in the lower 70s. Look for more scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop throughout the morning and afternoon hours.  Some storms could be strong with gusty winds and heavy rain.  Otherwise, we will be mostly cloudy, hot and humid with highs in the lower 90s.  Some of you may not even get to 90 today if you receive more rain. The clouds and a few showers will linger tonight.  It will be warm and muggy with lows in the lower 70s. Rest of the Week :  The cold front will fall apart along the Louisiana Coast on Thursday and some drier air aloft will move over Baton Rouge.  This will limit the amount of storms we will have.  You can expect partly cloudy skies with only isolated pop-up variety storms.  It will be hotter with highs in the lower 90s.

A Much Better Chance of Showers and Storms Return Today

Short Term Forecast :  We have another very warm and muggy start to the day with temperatures in the mid 70s under partly cloudy skies. Better take your umbrella with you this afternoon since we will have a better chance of rain and storms.  This is due to a weak cold front moving into Louisiana from the north and a disturbance moving in from Texas.  Those systems will tap into the very warm and humid air mass over Baton Rouge, and this will set off scattered to almost numerous showers and thunderstorms today.  A few storms could be strong with gusty winds, heavy rain and a lot of lightning.  We will still be hot before the storms develop with high temperatures in the lower 90s. Some showers and a few thunderstorms will continue tonight as the cold front slowly moves into Baton Rouge.  Otherwise, it will be partly to mostly cloudy with lows in the lower 70s. Week Ahead :  The cold front will stall and start to dissipate over Baton Rouge on Wednesday along with another disturba

Tropical Depression # 2 Has Formed In The NW Caribbean

Invest 93L has become Tropical Depression # 2 in the NW Caribbean.   Visible  satellite images show the cluster of showers and storms has developed a surface circulation with 35 mph winds.   It is forecast to make landfall tonight in the Yucatan Peninsula near Belize and then move into the Bay of Campeche later tomorrow.  It could possibly become stronger and become a tropical storm by Thursday before it makes a 2nd landfall in Mexico with 40 mph winds.  We DO NOT have to worry about this storm in Louisiana.  Stay tuned to WBRZ and my weather blog for updates on this system.

More Heat With Some Pop-Up Afternoon Storms Today

Short Term Forecast :  It is a warm and muggy Monday morning across the Capital City.  We have some clouds here in town and there are some showers popping up already in South Mississippi.  Those showers are moving to the east and out of the viewing area.  Temperatures are in the mid 70s. We will have another afternoon just like we did on Sunday...partly cloudy, hot and humid with pop-up showers and storms.  Some storms could have heavy rain and a lot of lightning.  High temperatures will be in the lower to mid 90s.  The heat index will be around 100 to 105. The storms will continue through the evening and then dissipate by 10 PM.  Then we will be left with a few clouds and muggy temperatures in the mid 70s. Week Ahead :  I'm watching a weak cold front that is moving toward the Southeast U.S. on Tuesday.  This will stall and fall apart over the Baton Rouge area by mid-week before a ridge of high pressure builds over us by the end of the week.  We will have partly cloudy ski

The storms will end tonight and we will be left with mainly clear skies.  It will be a few degrees "cooler" with lows in the lower 70s vs. upper 70s this morning. Father's Day Weekend :  An area of high pressure will sit over us on Saturday and this will give us partly cloudy skies with only one or two pop-up storms.  It will be very hot & humid with highs in the mid 90s.  The heat index will still be around 105° at times! Sunday, Father's Day, will still be very hot and humid, but w

Scorching Heat With Some Storms on Friday

Short Term Forecast :  It is another toasty afternoon/evening across the Baton Rouge area.  We have partly cloudy skies with only a spotty storm possible through the evening.  Temperatures are in the lower 90s, but will fall to the upper 80s through 8 PM. A weak cold front will push toward the city tonight.  It will bring us partly cloudy skies with a chance of seeing a shower or storm overnight/early Friday Morning.  We will stay very muggy with lows in the mid 70s. Friday will have partly cloudy skies with isolated showers and storms as the cold front moves toward the Coast.  Some of the storms could be strong to possibly severe with gusty winds and heavy rain.  Even though the cold front will push through town, it will NOT cool us down.  We will stay hot and very humid with highs in the mid 90s and the heat index will be around 100 to 105. What is left of the dissipating cold front will be along the Louisiana Coast on Friday Night.  We will have mostly clear to partly cloudy s

More Heat With Little Rain Through Father's Day Weekend

Short Term Forecast :  It is another hot and humid evening across the Capital City with mostly clear to partly cloudy skies.  A few storms have popped up along Highway 90 close to the Coast.  We could see a few more around Baton Rouge, but most of you will not see any rain through 8 PM.  Temperatures are in the 90s now, but will fall into the 80s by 8 PM. Expect some clouds tonight and it will be very muggy with lows in the mid 70s. Rest of the Week :  The ridge of high pressure will stay over us on Thursday, and that means another pretty hot day in Baton Rouge with partly cloudy skies.  Do not look for may storms as only a few are possible.  High temperatures will be in the mid 90s with the heat index around 100 to 105 at times. A weak and dissipating cold front will move toward Baton Rouge from the northeast on Thursday Night and Friday.  This will give us partly to mostly cloudy skies on Thursday Night with a few showers and storms.  Lows will be in the mid 70s. The front wil

Get Ready For Hazy, Hot and Humid Weather In Baton Rouge

I'm back!  I was on vacation last week in Key West, FL.  It seems like a very nice place, but go figure...it rained the entire time!  That was mainly thanks to Tropical Storm Andrea.  Oh well...it was still nice to have a vacation and now it is back to the grind...well, sort of.  I'm filling in for Pat Shingleton this week on the 4, 5, 6 & 10 PM shows.  Be sure to watch!  Here is what I am expecting with our weather this week... Short Term Forecast :  We will have scattered showers and thunderstorms through the afternoon and into the evening hours thanks to a weak disturbance and sea breeze.  These storms will likely be slow-movers, so heavy rain can be expected with some flash flooding.  Also, these storms could produce large hail, gusty winds and a lot of lightning.  Temperatures will be in the upper 80s where is it not raining. The storms will dissipate once we lose the sun and daytime heating.  We will become partly cloudy and muggy tonight with lows in the lower
