Pretty Hot With Only Spotty Storms Today

Short Term Forecast :  We have a partly to mostly cloudy start to the day in Baton Rouge thanks to some showers that are in South Mississippi.  These showers are coming off an outflow of thunderstorms that were in Northern Mississippi last night.  The showers should dissipate before getting down to Baton Rouge.  It is warm and muggy with temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. You can expect another sweltering day across town.  A ridge of high pressure sits over the Southeast U.S. and stretches all the west into New Mexico.  This is limiting the amount of storms that will pop-up with the heating of the day.  We will have a mix of sun and clouds with only spotty showers and storms today.  High temperatures will be in the mid 90s.  The heat index will be 100° to 105°. Some clouds will linger across Southeast Louisiana tonight.  It will be very warm and muggy with lows in the mid 70s. Rest of the Week :  The ridge of high pressure will remain in place on Thursday and Friday.  This

Hot With Only A Few Storms Today

Short Term Forecast :  It is a very warm and humid start to this Tuesday with some clouds and temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. We will have another hot and humid afternoon across the Capital City thanks to an area of high pressure sitting over the Southeast U.S.  There is a large thunderstorm complex over the Great Plains, and this could send some high clouds over us today.  If that cloud deck gets too thick we may not get as hot.  Otherwise, the area of high pressure is keeping the atmosphere warm from the surface to the mid-levels of the atmosphere, and that limits the amount of storms that can pop-up.  You really need some cooler air aloft to get more storms, and we don't have that.  Therefore, we will be partly cloudy with only a few storms popping up with the sea breeze.  High temperatures will be in the mid 90s with the heat index over 100°. Some clouds will stick around tonight making it partly cloudy.  It will stay warm and humid with lows in the mid 70s. Week

Hot and Mainly Dry Today

Short Term Forecast :  We have a very warm and muggy morning across the Capital City.  The sky is partly cloudy and the temperatures are in the 70s. We will be mainly dry today as a ridge of high pressure moves over the Southeast U.S. in the upper-levels of the atmosphere.  This will still give us partly cloudy skies with some stray showers and storms popping up.  However, most of you will not see any rain.  It will be pretty hot and humid with high temperatures in the lower to mid 90s.  The heat index will be around 100° to 105°.  Please stay hydrated and keep cool! Look for some clouds to stick around tonight and it will be muggy with low temperatures in the mid 70s. Week Ahead :  The ridge of high pressure will stay over us on Tuesday with partly cloudy skies popping up during the day.  We could also see isolated showers and storms pop-up with the heating of the day.  Highs will be in the mid 90s and lows in the mid 70s. The upper-level ridge of high pressure will retr

Some Stormy Weather To Start The Weekend

Short Term Forecast :  Once again we have a partly to mostly cloudy start to the day with isolated showers and storms popping up along the Coastal Parishes.  Some of this rain could move northward toward Baton Rouge during the morning commute.  Temperatures are in the 70s. We will continue to be hot today, but there will be a little better chance of some rain.  An area of low pressure with associated cold and warm fronts is located to the northwest of Louisiana.  It will be moving toward us this afternoon.  We will be hot and humid ahead of it, and the sea breeze will help to set off isolated showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.  High temperatures will be in the lower 90s.  The heat index will be around 100°. The showers and storms will taper off this evening, but they another batch of rain and storms will arrive overnight into Saturday Morning with mostly cloudy skies.  Low temperatures will be in the lower to mid 70s. Weekend Forecast :  It looks like the we

Staying Hot With Spotty Storms Today

Short Term Forecast :  We have a partly to mostly cloudy morning across the Baton Rouge area with temperatures in the 70s.  Some coastal showers have developed as well. You can expect another very hot and humid day with only spotty storms this afternoon.  This is all thanks to the northwest winds aloft keeping it pretty dry up there.  We will be partly cloudy to a mix of clouds and sun just like we were the last few days.  With the intense heat I can't rule out seeing a few storms popping up later this afternoon and into the evening hours.  High temperatures will be in the mid 90s with the heat index around 105° at times. Any storms we get today will dissipate by 10 PM and then we will be left with partly cloudy skies.  It will be warm and muggy with lows in the mid 70s. Friday will be very similar to today since the weather pattern will not be much different.  I will be watching for any thunderstorm complexes to form in the Great Plains states today to see if they will br

More Heat With Spotty Storms Today

Short Term Forecast :  Once again it is a very warm and muggy morning with mostly cloudy skies across the Capital City.  A few showers are possible as some rain is moving toward Baton Rouge from the north.  A lot of the rain is dissipating as it heads toward us.  Temperatures are in the mid to upper 70s. We will have another scorcher this afternoon as an area of high pressure sits over the Central Gulf of Mexico and another area of high pressure sits over the Rocky Mountain States.  This is bringing in northwest winds aloft and that limits the amount of storms that will pop-up in the afternoon hours.  However, it also means that any storms that develop over the Great Plains states will dive to the southeast toward Louisiana.  I am watching a few thunderstorms complexes over the Plains States, and the forecast models are hinting that they could survive all the way to Baton Rouge.  If this happens we will see some storms by this evening.  Otherwise, it will be partly cloudy, hot and

Hotter With Spotty Storms Today

Short Term Forecast :  It is a very warm and muggy start to this Tuesday with partly to mostly cloudy skies.  Temperatures are in the mid to upper 70s. I am not expecting to see as many storms this afternoon compared to the last few days.  This is thanks to an area of high pressure over the Gulf of Mexico that is moving to the west and another area of high pressure over the Western U.S.  They are sending some drier air aloft, and that limits the amount of storms you will have over the area with northwest winds aloft.  Therefore, we will be partly cloudy, hotter and humid with only spotty storms.  High temperatures will be in the lower to mid 90s.  The heat index will be over 100°! Look for some clouds tonight and it will be stuffy.  Low temperatures will be in the mid 70s. Week Ahead :  We will stay very hot and humid on Wednesday with only a slight chance of a shower or storm.  We could have some storms moving from the Great Plains States southeastward toward Louisiana.  If they

Stormy Today, But The Heat Returns Later This Week

Short Term Forecast :  We have a very warm and muggy start to this Monday with some clouds.  A few showers and thunderstorms could pop-up later this morning.  Temperatures are in the 70s. You can expect another day with scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms.  A trough of low pressure is located north of Louisiana and when you combine that with a very unstable air mass over Baton Rouge that will lead to more storms today with partly to mostly cloudy skies.  Some of the storms could be strong with gusty winds and heavy rain.  High temperatures will be in the lower 90s.  However, if the storms form sooner than later we may not get out of the 80s again today. The showers and storms will linger into the evening before tapering off by 10 PM.  Then we will be partly cloudy and muggy with lows in the mid 70s. Week Ahead :  A ridge of high pressure to the west of Louisiana will help to keep Baton Rouge almost dry the rest of the week!  We will have winds out of the northwest

Scattered Storms Will Continue Each Day This Weekend

Short Term Forecast :  We have another quiet start to the day across Baton Rouge with some clouds and muggy temperatures in the 70s. The weather pattern has not changed much today, so more of the same weather is on tap this afternoon.  A trough of low pressure remains over the Southeast U.S. and and upper-level low (TUTT Low) is sitting over the Northern Gulf of Mexico.  These features, when combined with daytime heating, will lead to partly cloudy skies with scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon.  Some of the storms could be strong with gusty winds and heavy rain.  High temperatures will be in the lower 90s, and some of you may not make it that high. The showers and storms will continue through the evening before dissipating around 10 PM.  Then we will be left with partly cloudy skies overnight.  It will be warm and muggy with lows in the lower 70s. Weekend Forecast :  The trough of low pressure and the upper-level low will still play a role in our weather this

Hot With Scattered Thunderstorms Today

Short Term Forecast :  It is a pretty quiet morning across the Capital City.  We have mostly clear to partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the 70s. We will have a more active afternoon with showers and thunderstorms.  This is thanks to a shortwave, or disturbance, moving across part of the Deep South and a TUTT Low ( tropical upper tropospheric trough ) , or upper-level tropical low, in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico.  Combine those features with daytime heating and we will have scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms this afternoon.  It will still be hot before it rains with highs in the lower 90s and the heat index in the upper 90s. The showers and storms will continue until 10 PM and then we will have some lingering clouds overnight.  It will be warm and stuffy with lows in the lower 70s. You can expect more scattered showers and thunderstorms on Friday as the extra Gulf Moisture sits over us along with the upper-level low in the Gulf.  Highs will be in the lower 90

Hotter With Fewer Storms Today

Short Term Forecast :  We have some mostly clear to partly cloudy skies on this Wednesday Morning.  It is pretty muggy with temperatures in the 70s. Some drier air will move over Baton Rouge today as an area of high pressure sits over the Southeast U.S.  This will limit the amount of storms that will pop-up today.  Therefore, it will be partly cloudy and hotter with only isolated showers and thunderstorms.  High temperatures will be in the lower 90s. Expect a few clouds tonight making it mainly clear and it will be muggy with low temperatures in the lower 70s. Rest of the Week :  A little extra moisture arrives on Thursday as the area of high pressure moves to the west of Louisiana.  This will slightly increase the chance of rain in the afternoon.  We will be partly cloudy with isolated showers and storms again.  High temperatures will be in the lower 90s.  Thursday Night will be mostly clear with lows in the lower 70s. Some deeper tropical moisture will return to Baton R

Plenty of Heavy Rain and Storms Today

Short Term Forecast :  We have a partly to mostly cloudy morning across the Baton Rouge area with a few showers starting to pop-up.  Most of the rain is along the coast, but it will drift inland throughout the morning hours.  Temperatures are in the 70s. The upper-level low is moving from the Texas Panhandle into New Mexico today.  It will continue to draw in deep tropical moisture over Baton Rouge today.  This will give us a mix of sun and clouds with scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms.  Some of the storms could be strong with gusty winds and heavy rain.  Watch out for some flash flooding!  High temperatures will only get up to the upper 80s. Most of the rain will come to an end by 10 PM tonight.  Then we will be left with some clouds and spotty showers.  Low temperatures will be in the lower 70s. Week Ahead :  The deep tropical moisture will shift westward into Texas tomorrow as the upper-level low sits near the Four Corners of the U.S.  At the same time, an are

Scattered Thunderstorms Continue For The First Part of The Week

Happy St. Swithin's Day!   Today is St. Swithin's Day! It is weather folklore that states if it rains today then it will rain for 40 days. If it is fair weather, 40 days of fair weather will follow. The forecast is calling for rain today, so...I guess we'll see what happens. For more info on St. Swithin's Day, click here .  Short Term Forecast :  We start this Monday with partly to mostly cloudy skies in Baton Rouge.  Some patchy fog has also been reported.  A few showers and storms are popping up along the Coast.  Temperatures are in the lower 70s. The wet weather pattern will continue this afternoon thanks to a retrograding upper-level low moving over Oklahoma and Texas.  Under the low there will be plenty of rain and storms.  Since Baton Rouge is located to the southeast of the center of the low, we will have plenty of southerly winds over us, and that will draw up plenty of Gulf Moisture.  This will keep it very humid and allow for scattered showers and storm

The Weekend Starts Pleasant, But Ends With Some Storms

Short Term Forecast :  We have a mostly cloudy and stuffy morning across Baton Rouge as the cold front remains north of the state.  Temperatures are in the lower 70s. The cold front will move into Baton Rouge this afternoon and it will set off some isolated showers and storms.  We will have less coverage of storms compared to yesterday.  Otherwise, expect a mix of sun and clouds with high temperatures in the lower 90s. The storms will end tonight inland, but may persist overnight along the coast as the cold front stalls there.   Expect a few clouds in town and it will not be as muggy with lows near 70. Weekend Forecast :  Some drier air will move over the city on Saturday as northerly winds usher it our way.  This will lead to partly cloudy skies with only a spotty shower possible.  It will be hot, but a little less humid with highs in the lower 90s.  Saturday Night will be somewhat pleasant with mostly clear skies and lows in the lower 70s. The dry air will leave the area o

A Cold Front Brings Us Rain and Storms Today

Short Term Forecast :  We have a very warm and muggy morning in Baton Rouge with partly to mostly cloudy skies.  I am expecting some showers to start popping up during the morning hours as a cold front starts moving toward Baton Rouge from the north.  Temperatures are in the mid to upper 70s. The cold front will slowly move toward town today.  It will tap into the deep tropical moisture over us, and that will set off scattered showers and thunderstorms with mostly cloudy skies.  Some of the storms could be strong with heavy rain, gusty winds and lightning.  We will still be hot before the rain comes with highs in the lower 90s. The front will stall along the I-10 corridor tonight.  This will keep it mostly cloudy with scattered showers and a few storms overnight.  Lows will be in the mid 70s. Finally the cold front will drift into the Northern Gulf of Mexico on Friday.  It will still be close enough to help set off isolated to scattered showers and storms.  Otherwise, it will

More Heat With Scattered Storms Today

Short Term Forecast :  We have a very warm and muggy Wednesday Morning across Baton Rouge with partly to mostly cloudy skies.  Temperatures are in the mid to upper 70s. Look for another afternoon similar to the last few with plenty of heat and thunderstorms.  Baton Rouge is sitting between to areas of high pressure - one over the Four Corners of the U.S. and another off the East Coast.  This is allowing deep tropical moisture to come right up the Gulf into the state.  Combine that with daytime heating plus the sea breeze and you get scattered showers and thunderstorms.  Some heavy rain will still be possible too.  High temperatures will be in the lower 90s.  The heat index will be around 100. The showers and storms will continue into the evening hours and then they will taper off overnight with partly cloudy skies.  It will be stuffy with lows in the mid 70s. Rest of the Week :  A trough of low pressure will move down the Eastern U.S. on Thursday and Friday.  This will send a

Hot With More Scattered Storms Today

Short Term Forecast :  We have a pretty quiet start to this Tuesday with some clouds and patchy fog.  Temperatures are in the 70s. Expect another afternoon just like we had on Monday...it will be hot and humid with partly cloudy skies to start the afternoon.  Then we will have scattered showers and storms popping up.  Some of the storms could have heavy rain at times.  High temperatures will be in the lower 90s. The storms will continue into the evening hours before they dissipate overnight.  Then we will have a few clouds with low temperatures in the mid 70s. Week Ahead :  We are going to have the same weather pattern on Wednesday and Thursday as an area of high pressure sits along the East Coast and continues to pump in Gulf Moisture over us.  Each day will have partly cloudy skies with isolated to scattered showers and storms thanks to the sea breeze.  It will be hot and humid with highs in the lower 90s and lows in the lower to mid 70s. A cold front is forecast to move cl

Tropical Storm Chantal Has Formed In The Atlantic

Last Night Tropical Storm Chantal formed WAY out in the Atlantic Ocean in the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). You do not typically have many storms forming out there in July, but they can happen especially when the water temperatures are in the 80s.  When they do form that far south, climatology says they usually move quickly to the west and have a hard time developing.  That seems to be the case with Chantal so far.  Winds are sustained at 40 mph and it is moving to the west at 26 mph.  Typically for a storm to intensify you need to to move less than 18 mph.  The storm is forecast to get a little stronger once it moves toward Puerto Rico on Wednesday, but it is not forecast to become a hurricane at this time. Chantal is forecast to ride along the southern part of a ridge of high pressure sitting over the Eastern Atlantic.  A weakness in the ridge (the current low sitting near the Bahamas will move west into the Gulf) over the Gulf of Mexico by this weekend will help to tur

More Scattered Storms Expected On This Monday

Short Term Forecast :  We have a partly to mostly cloudy start to this Monday with a few coastal showers.  It is warm and muggy with temperatures in the 70s. You can expect another round of scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon.  Once again, not all of you will get the rain.  This is coming from what is left of the tropical wave that moved across the Gulf this weekend and an upper-level low that stayed north of Louisiana.  It will be a very warm and humid day with highs in the upper 80s. Some showers will continue into the evening and then will end overnight with some lingering clouds.  Lows will be in the lower 70s. Week Ahead :  Both the wave and low will move away from Louisiana on Tuesday.  This will allow us to return to a more typical Summer day with partly cloudy skies and isolated to scattered afternoon showers and storms popping up on Tuesday through Thursday.  It will be hotter with highs in the lower 90s and lows in the mid 70s each day. On Friday,
