Becoming Hotter and More Humid This Labor Day Weekend

Short Term Forecast :  It is a little warmer today compared to the last few mornings.  We have mostly clear skies with temperatures in the upper 60s to lower 70s. The ridge of high pressure will continue to sit over us today.  That means more of the same weather with partly cloudy skies, but it will be a tad hotter with high temperatures in the lower 90s. There will be mostly clear skies tonight, and it will not be as cool.  Low temperatures will be in the lower 70s. Weekend Forecast :  The ridge will start to move to the west of Louisiana over the weekend, and a disturbance/upper-level low will move from north to south along the LA/TX border.  This will allow us to become hotter and more humid.  We could see a spotty shower popping up as well.  Therefore, Saturday and Sunday will be partly cloudy with a slight chance of a shower.  Highs will be in the lower to mid 90s and lows in the mid 70s each day and night. Football Forecast :  If you are headed to Dallas for the LSU ga

August 29th NOT A Good Day For Louisiana Weather History

It was on this date late year that Hurricane Isaac made landfall in Southeast Louisiana.  It was a very slow-moving hurricane that dumped a ton of rain over the state and caused a significant storm surge that flooded parts of La Place, Ascension Parish and Lower Livingston Parish.  The weather in Baton Rouge was very rainy with rainfall totals ranging from 5-15".  This caused some flooding along local rivers, but wind damage was minimal. Also, 8 years ago today Hurricane Katrina made landfall near Pass Christian, MS with a 27.8 ft. storm surge!  Of course we all remember what happened to New Orleans and the clean up continues today in some parts of the city.  We had some damage across the Baton Rouge area with some people without power for weeks!  We didn't get a lot of rain since we were on the western-side of the eye, or the better side.  Plenty of thoughts go out to all of those that were killed on this day. Needless to say, August 29th is not a good day in Louisi

The Dry Weather Continues In Baton Rouge Today

Short Term Forecast :  Fortunately, the weather is very quiet this year compared to last year as Hurricane Isaac was making landfall over SE Louisiana and 8 years ago when Hurricane Katrina made landfall along the LA/MS state line.  We have clear skies and refreshing temperatures in the 60s! The ridge of high pressure is still sitting over us today and that means more dry and hot weather for Baton Rouge.  We will be partly cloudy with high temperatures in the lower 90s. You can expect more pleasant weather tonight.  We will be clear, but not as cool with low temperatures near 70. Friday will still be a dry day as the ridge remains over us.  We will be partly cloudy, but hotter with high temperatures in the mid 90s.  A spotty shower is possible during the afternoon hours.  Friday Night will be mostly clear and warmer with lows in the lower 70s. Weekend Forecast :  Do not expect much change in the forecast on Saturday.  We will stay partly cloudy, hot and dry with highs in the

A Hot Day With Pleasant Weather Tonight

Short Term Forecast :  We have a very pleasant morning in Baton Rouge with cool temperatures in the 60s under clear skies.  Areas closer to the coast are in the 70s.  By the way...it is warmer in Northern Indiana with morning temperatures in the mid 70s according to my meteorologist buddy Tom Coomes!!  This is some crazy weather! The ridge of high pressure will remain over us today.  That means we will have more partly cloudy and dry weather.  Plus we will start to become hotter with high temperatures in the lower 90s. You can expect some comfortable weather tonight with clear skies and lower humidity.  Low temperatures will be in the upper 60s. Rest of the Week :  That ridge of high pressure will stay over us on Thursday and Friday.  Each day will be partly cloudy and hot with highs in the lower to mid 90s.  Each night will be mostly clear, but not as cool with lows in the lower 70s. Weekend Outlook :  More dry weather is on tap on Saturday, but the ridge is expected to b

Becoming Much Hotter and Drier Today

Short Term Forecast :  We have a mostly clear start to this Tuesday with some slightly less humid air.  Temperatures are in the upper 60s in Mississippi to lower 70s across the Baton Rouge area. A ridge of high pressure will build over the Southeast U.S. today.  This will clear out all of the rain we had the last few days, and we will start to dry out.  A stray shower can't be ruled out, but the chance of rain is only at 10% today.  Otherwise, it will be partly cloudy and hotter with highs in the lower 90s. It is going to be a very pleasant night with mostly clear skies.  Low temperatures will fall to the upper 60s as the drier air moves over the city.  This will be a nice treat for late August! Week Ahead :  The ridge of high pressure will remain over the Southeast U.S. on Wednesday through Friday.  Each day will be partly cloudy, hot and a little humid.  High temperatures will be in the mid 90s.  Each night will be mostly clear and warm with lows in the lower to mid 7

After Today, Hotter and Drier Weather Returns This Week

Short Term Forecast :  We have a mostly cloudy and warm morning across the Capital City.  Some showers are developing along the coast and are moving to the west.  Temperatures are in the 70s. The tropical wave/disturbance/low along the Louisiana Coast is finally moving into Texas today.  We will still have to deal with it today in Baton Rouge.  That means we will have a mix of sun and clouds with isolated showers and a few thunderstorms.  The cloud cover will help to keep temperatures down with highs only in the upper 80s. It will become partly cloudy tonight and be somewhat comfortable.  Low temperatures will be in the upper 60s. Week Ahead :  An area of high pressure, currently located along the East Coast, will move to the west over the Southeast U.S. Tuesday through Friday.  This will usher in drier air and that will significantly reduce the amount of rain we will have each day.  It will also mean we will become much hotter!  Therefore, we will be partly cloudy with only s

Tropical Depression #6 is now Tropical Storm Fernand In The Bay of Campeche

UPDATE : TD 6 has been upgraded to Tropical Storm Fernand based off data from the Hurricane Hunters. It will make landfall in Mexico on Monday.  Previous Post:  Invest 95L has developed into Tropical Depression #6.  It moved off of the Yucatan Peninsula and into the Bay of Campeche earlier today.  The low wind shear and warm waters allowed the disturbance to get stronger.  This was based on surface observations from Mexico and satellite interpretation.  Hurricane Hunters are en-route to this system and will get more date later this evening. Winds are sustained at 35 mph, pressure 1006 mb and it is moving to the west at 12 mph.  It will track to the WNW and slow down over the next day.  TD 6 is forecast to strengthen into a tropical storm by Monday before is moves inland near Veracruz, MX, and it would get the name Fernand.  Once it moves inland by Monday afternoon/evening it will dissipate and bring heavy rains to Mexico. This storm will NOT impact Louisiana, so we do not nee

Storms on Sunday, Hotter & Drier Next Week, and A Look At The Tropics

Short Term Forecast :  The tropical wave and upper-level low pressure are sitting along the Louisiana Coast this evening.  This gave us the scattered rain and storms today.  The rain is mainly along the Coastal Parishes tonight with partly cloudy skies overnight in Baton Rouge.  Low temperatures will be in the lower 70s. You can expect more of the same weather on Sunday as the tropical wave/upper-level low slowly move into Texas.  This will give us a mix of sun and clouds with scattered showers and storms starting in the morning and lasting through the afternoon/evening.  High temperatures will be held down to the upper 80s thanks to the clouds and rain. Sunday Night will have some clouds with low temperatures in the lower 70s. Next Week Outlook :  An area of high pressure will build across the Southeast U.S. all of next week.  This will limit the amount of rain/storms we get as much drier air aloft moves over us.  Therefore, we will be partly cloudy and hot with only spotty show

The Threat For Scattered Storms Continues All Weekend

Short Term Forecast :  We have a mostly clear to partly cloudy morning across the Capital City.  There are a few showers and storms along the Louisiana Coast.  Temperatures are in the 70s. A tropical wave/trough of low pressure will be slowly moving to the west across the Northern Gulf of Mexico today.  As this wave approaches Louisiana it will interact with a sea breeze and they will set off scattered showers and storms over Baton Rouge.  Otherwise, we will have a mix of sun and clouds with highs in the lower 90s. The storms will dissipate by 9 PM this evening and then we will have partly cloudy skies overnight.  Low temperatures will be in the lower 70s. Weekend Forecast :  The tropical wave will still be playing a role in setting off scattered showers and storms over Southeast Louisiana on Saturday.  Some heavy rain will be possible, especially over the Coastal Parishes.  Highs will be in the lower 90s.  Saturday Night will have some clouds with lows in the mid 70s. Sunday&#

Hot With More Scattered Afternoon Storms

Short Term Forecast :  We have a partly cloudy start to the day in the Baton Rouge area with some showers and storms popping up along the Louisiana Coast as a weak disturbance moves by.  Temperatures are in the 70s. It is going to be a hot and humid afternoon across Southeast Louisiana just like it should be for late-August.  A tropical wave is located over the Eastern Gulf of Mexico and that will be moving toward the Northern Gulf later today and tomorrow.  We will be partly cloudy with scattered showers and storms popping up over the afternoon and evening hours thanks to the sea breeze and heating of the day.  High temperatures will be in the lower 90s. The showers and storms will dissipate by 10 PM and then we will be left with partly cloudy skies overnight.  It will be warm and sticky with lows in the lower 70s. Friday will have more scattered showers and storms developing as the weak tropical wave moves along our Coast.  Otherwise, it will be partly cloudy and hot with hig

Scattered To Numerous Storms With Heavy Rain Today

Short Term Forecast :  We have a pleasant morning with partly cloudy skies and some patchy fog.  Temperatures are in the 70s. Get ready for a soggy afternoon!  Louisiana is sitting between to areas of high pressure.  This causes a weakness to develop over us, and that leads to rain.  Additionally, there is a weak area of upper-level low pressure associated with an easterly wave/tropical wave moving west across the Northern Gulf of Mexico.  When you combine all of those factors with daytime heating you get scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms.  Some of the storms will have heavy rain too.  High temperatures will be around 90 before the rain starts. The showers and storms will last through the evening before tapering off by 10 PM.  Then we will be left with mostly cloudy skies and low temperatures in the lower to mid 70s. Rest of the Week :  We will return to a more typical Summer day as the areas of high pressure stay in place on Thursday and Friday.  This will give u

More Humid With Isolated Storms Today

Short Term Forecast :  We have a partly to mostly cloudy morning across the Capital City with some light fog.  It is warm and muggy with temperatures in the 70s. The stationary front is still sitting along the Louisiana Coast and it stretches eastward to the Carolinas.  Showers and storms will develop along the front with the heating of the day and the sea breeze.  Together, they will move inland and give the Baton Rouge area isolated showers and storms this afternoon.  Otherwise, we will have a mix of sun and clouds with highs around 90. Some rain and storms will linger into the evening hours before they dissipate by 10 PM.  Then we will have mostly cloudy skies overnight with lows in the lower 70s. Week Ahead :  An easterly wave, or tropical wave, will move from east to west across the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday.  This will help to set off scattered to numerous showers and storms over Southeast Louisiana.  Some heavy rain can be expected.  It will still be hot and humid

Hotter With A Few Showers Today And More Storms Later This Week

Short Term Forecast:  We have a mostly cloudy and misty  morning across the Baton Rouge area.  Watch out for some patchy fog.  Showers and storms are popping up along the stationary front sitting along the Louisiana Coast.  Temperatures are in the lower 70s. The stationary front will remain along the Louisiana Coast today, and that will be the focus for showers and storms in the Coastal Parishes.  A few showers may make it into Baton Rouge this afternoon, but we will be mainly dry with partly cloudy skies.  High temperatures will be around 90. Some low clouds will develop overnight and we will be a little more humid with low temperatures in the lower 70s. Week Ahead:  An area of high pressure will be sitting along the East Coast of the U.S. for the rest of the week.  This will pump in additional Gulf Moisture over Baton Rouge.  At the same time, easterly waves/tropical waves will be moving from east to west across the Gulf.  Combine that with daytime heating and we will have s

Saturday Update on Poorly-Organized Invest 92L

As of this Saturday afternoon, Invest 92L is still very disorganized as it sits in the Southern Gulf of Mexico.  There is an area of low pressure and more thunderstorms are developing around the center.  However, the low-level circulation is becoming elongated, or being stretched out.  This is not good for a system if it wants to develop.  Upper-level wind shear is helping to stretch out the disturbance, and they will only be somewhat favorable for development over the next few days.  The disturbance is moving to the NW to WNW over the next 2 days and will stay in the Western Gulf of Mexico.  The Hurricane Hunters were scheduled to investigate the system today, but their mission was canceled. The forecast models plots show the disturbance moving into Texas and Mexico over the next few days, and it will stay away from Louisiana.  After 48 hours, development is unlikely since it will be interacting with land.  However, the rains on the eastern side of it will continue to stream nort

Friday Update On Invest 92L In The Gulf of Mexico

Invest 92L  has emerged from the Yucatan into the Gulf of Mexico this morning.  It remains disorganized with  showers and storms mainly on the eastern side of the broad area of low pressure.  It is forecast to move north and west into the Central Gulf over the next 24 hours.  A trough of low pressure will be moving down from Canada across the Southeast U.S. today and this weekend.  This trough will pull part of the disturbance northward into the Central Gulf.  A small piece of the disturbance will likely form into a little area of low pressure, and that will spread very heavy rain/storms across the LA/MS/AL/FL coasts. Water Vapor Imagery is showing an upper-level low that is now interacting with the disturbance.  This low will move over the disturbance today and a surface low could form.  The Eastern U.S. trough will help to increase winds over the Gulf and that will limit the amount of development of the low.  If this disturbance tracks more to the north it will interact with the

Few Showers This Weekend, Keeping An Eye On The Gulf of Mexico

Short Term Forecast :  The stationary front remains along the Louisiana Coast and some showers have been developing along it.  In Baton Rouge, we have partly to mostly cloudy skies with temperatures in the 70s. The front will continue to sit along the coast today.  Some drier air will move in from the north, and that will prevent us from getting much, if any, rain.  We will be partly cloudy and hot with highs in the lower 90s. Partly cloudy skies will stick around tonight, and it will be a tad cool.  Low temperatures will be in the upper 60s to lower 70s. Weekend Forecast :  All eyes will be on the Gulf of Mexico this weekend as Invest 92L moves into the Central Gulf.  There is a chance this system will survive some wind shear as a trough of low pressure moves down from Canada, and it could develop into something.  Regardless of development, it will send plenty of rain from the SE Louisiana Coast through the Florida Panhandle. Baton Rouge will be partly cloudy with only a few

The Latest Update On Invest 92L

I'm still closely watching the  tropical disturbance , Invest 92L, in the Northwest Caribbean/Yucatan Peninsula.  It will move across the Yucatan later tonight/tonight, and then it will emerge in the Southern Gulf of Mexico on Friday.  Once it is in the Gulf there are all sorts of scenarios that are possible.  Upper-level winds (wind shear) are forecast to be a little stronger over the Gulf and that could prevent the system from getting very organized. The forecast models are all over the place with the evolution of this system, but they seem to be taking on a more westward track as of this afternoon.  One set still has it moving north toward LA/MS, and the others have it going into Texas or Old Mexico.  The trough of low pressure over the Eastern U.S. and stationary front sitting along the Northern Gulf of Mexico will have an impact on what this system will do.  The trough will help to keep some decent wind shear over the Gulf, but it will also help to pull the system northw
