Chilly and Sunny Weather Is Expected For Christmas Day

Christmas Eve Night :  We will be clear as an area of high pressure sits over us.  Dress warmly as you head to any family gatherings or church services this evening.  Temperatures will be falling into the 40s and 30s.  It will be very cold again overnight with low temperatures falling to the upper 20s as Santa passes through Baton Rouge.  Everyone will need to bundle up! Christmas Day Forecast :  Get ready for a beautiful and cool Christmas!  The area of high pressure will move northeast of us, and some clouds will stream in from the Gulf of Mexico.  This will make it partly cloudy and cool with high temperatures in the upper 50s.  Christmas Night will be partly cloudy and still chilly with lows in the lower 30s. Rest of the Week :  A weak and dry cold front will move through Baton Rouge on Thursday.  This will just give us partly cloudy skies and it will fall apart as it moves through.  It will be a little warmer with highs around 60.  Thursday Night will be mostly clear and

Gorgeous and Cold Weather For The Start of Christmas Week

Tonight's Forecast :  Get ready for a VERY COLD night across the Capital City!  The clouds will be moving east of town and it will be clear overnight.  Low temperatures will be in the upper 20s!  Brrr! Christmas Eve & Day :  Tuesday will be gorgeous as an area of high pressure builds over the Southeast U.S.  This will give us sunny skies and more cool temperatures.  Highs will be in the mid 50s.  Christmas Eve Night will be clear and very cold again!  Be sure to dress warmly as you head to your church services!  Lows will be in the upper 20s!  Santa will have to bundle up when he arrives in Baton Rouge! Christmas Day will be another beauty with sunny skies & cool temperatures.  Highs will be in the upper 50s and lows will not be quite as cold as they fall to the lower 30s on Wednesday Night. Rest of the Week :  The area of high pressure will move east of Louisiana on Thursday and Friday.  A weak trough of low pressure will push across the U.S.  This system will

Strong to Severe Thunderstorms Are Possible Today In Baton Rouge

The Storm Prediction Center has much of the WBRZ Viewing area in a Slight Risk for severe weather today, but some areas just north of Baton Rouge are in a Moderate Risk (a greater chance of seeing severe weather).  Fortunately, Baton Rouge will not see the worst of the severe weather - that will be in North Louisiana and through much of Mississippi into Tennessee. A trough of low pressure is moving across the Central U.S. and there is a strengthening area of low pressure in the base of that trough.  A cold front is also attached to that low.  As this low moves to the east it will go over an area of very unstable air.  This is thanks to a very unseasonably warm and humid air mass and a strong low to mid-level jet stream.  You can see the low-level jet by looking at the clouds - they are just zipping by!  This also means it will be very windy at the surface.  Winds will be out of the south at 25 mph with higher gusts to 35 mph - and that is outside of any storms.  The NWS has issued

Strong To Severe Storms Possible on Saturday With Cooler Weather For Christmas

Tonight Forecast :  We will be mostly cloudy, warm and muggy with spotty showers across the Baton Rouge area.  Some patchy fog is possible too especially along the Coast and Lakes.  Low temperatures will only fall to the upper 60s. Weekend Storms :  Get ready for a severe weather event across the Baton Rouge area this weekend!!!  A strong trough, area of low pressure and cold front will move out of the Great Plains and into the Deep South on Saturday.  It will be very warm and humid with near record high temperatures around 80 ahead of the low and cold front.  This will make the atmosphere very unstable as the low gets stronger over Texas.  Additionally, there will be strong winds around 25 mph at the surface, and even strong winds around 100 mph all the way up to 40,000 feet.  These winds will turn in height (veering) coming out of the south at the surface and coming out of the west at 40,000 feet.  That means any thunderstorm that develops and rises will have the chance to rotat

Becoming Warmer and More Humid With Strong To Severe Storms Possible Saturday Night

Short Term Forecast :  It is going to be a mostly cloudy, warm and foggy night across the Capital City.  Low temperatures will be in the upper 50s to lower 60s.  Some of the fog could become dense at times, so watch out on Friday Morning. Friday will be a warmer and more humid day as the area of high pressure sits well east of Louisiana.  Southerly winds will pump in the warm and humid air from the Gulf of Mexico.  This will make it mostly cloudy and some isolated to scattered showers will also pop-up during the day.  High temperatures will be in the upper 70s. Friday Night will continue to be mostly cloudy with a few showers moving through town overnight.  It will be warm and muggy with lows in the mid 60s. Stormy Weekend :  A trough of low pressure will move across the Great Plains and toward the Southeast U.S. this weekend.  An area of low pressure will form in the base of the trough and will have a cold front attached to it.  This low will get strong as it moves to the east a

Becoming Warmer With Storms Returning This Weekend

Note: I'm filling in for Pat Shingleton in the evening hours, so my weather blog will be updated in the evening verses the morning. Short Term Forecast :  We will have another pleasant night across the Capital City.  It will not be as cold as more southerly winds replace the cold northerly winds.  Clouds will start to pop-up overnight along with some patchy fog.  Low temperatures will be in the upper 40s to lower 50s. The area of high pressure that was sitting over us the last few days will be east of Louisiana on Thursday.  This is why we will have southerly winds, or return flow, over Baton Rouge.  These winds will pump in the warm and more humid air from the Gulf of Mexico.  That will give us partly to mostly cloudy skies with a few sprinkles.  High temperatures will be in the lower to mid 70s. Thursday Night will be mostly cloudy with a few showers popping up.  It will be warm and muggy with low temperatures in the lower 60s along with some fog. Friday will continue

More Sunny and Dry Weather Today

Short Term Forecast :  We have another cold and frosty start to the day with temperatures in the lower to mid 30s under clear skies.  Bundle up as you head out the door! If you liked the weather yesterday, then you will like the weather again today.  The ridge of high pressure remains over the Southeast U.S. and that will keep us sunny.  We will become a few degrees warmer with high temperatures in the mid 60s. Another chilly night is in store for us across Southeast Louisiana.  We will have clear skies with lows in the upper 30s. Week Ahead :  The area of high pressure will continue to sit over us on Wednesday, and that means more pleasant weather.  We will stay sunny with just a few high clouds streaming overhead.  It will be even warmer with highs in the upper 60s.  Wednesday Night will be mostly clear and not as chilly with lows near 50.  Some patchy fog is possible. The high pressure will move east of Louisiana on Thursday and that will allow the winds to shift from the

It will remain clear and cold tonight with some patchy frost.  Low temperatures will be in the upper 30s. Week Ahead :  The area of high pressure will remain over the Southeast U.S. on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Each day will have sunny skies, and it will gradually get warmer each day.  Highs will be in the mid to upper 60s.  Lows will be in the upper 30s on Tuesday Night, but only falling to the upper 40s Wednesday Night. The ridge of high pressure will move east of Louisiana on Thursday and that will bring back southerly winds to the state.  These winds will us

Some Rain Today With Plenty of Sunshine Sunday

Weekend Cold Fronts :  The heaviest rain has come to an end for the day and some sun will be peaking out from time to time making it mostly cloudy.  However, there will also still be some lingering light showers or drizzle/mist possible later today as another cold front moves through later this afternoon/evening. As for temperatures...we will climb into the upper 60s this afternoon before the next cold front passes through, and then the temps. will quickly fall down to the 30s tonight. Plenty of sunshine is on tap for Sunday, but it will be cool with highs in the lower 50s.  Sunday Night will be clear and very cold with a light freeze and lows in the lower 30s. Some Soggy Weather To Start The Weekend, But It Ends Sunny

Short Term Forecast:  We start this Friday with some partly to mostly cloudy skies as high clouds stream over us from the west.  These clouds will get thicker as the morning progresses.  It is quite cold with temperatures in the lower to mid 30s, so be sure to bundle up once again! Expect mostly cloudy skies today as the area of high pressure moves to the east of Louisiana.  That will allow the winds to shift from the northeast to the southeast by the afternoon, and that will draw up warmer and more humid air from the Gulf of Mexico.  I'm not expecting any rain to develop during the day over Baton Rouge as a cold front and area of low pressure moves across Texas.  High temperatures will be in the lower 60s. Scattered to numerous showers with a few thunderstorms are going to move into Baton Rouge tonight.  This rain is associated with the low and cold front.  Some of the rain could get heavy rain at times, and it will start after 10 PM.  Low temperatures will be in the upper

Some high clouds will move over us during the afternoon hours today as an area of high pressure sits over the Southeast U.S.  This will make it mostly sunny to partly cloudy in the wake of the cold front that passed over us last night.  We will stay cool with high temperatures in the lower 50s. Clouds will be on the increase again tonight ahead of the next cold front.  We will be partly to mostly cloudy with chilly low temperatures in the lower 30s.  A light freeze will be possible for some of you. The weather will start to change on Friday.  The area of high pressure will move east of Louisiana and that will shift the winds from the north to the south.  These southerly winds will start to pump in the warm and humid air from the Gulf.  This will make it mostly cloudy and hel

Short Term Forecast :  It is quite cold this morning!  We have clear skies, some frost and temperatures in the lower 30s.  Bundle up as you head out the door today!!! This afternoon will not be as pretty as yesterday, but we will still see some sunshine.  An area of high pressure will sit over the Southeast U.S., but some high clouds will move over us from the west and south ahead of a cold front.  This will give us a mix of sun and clouds, but we will stay dry.  At times it may even seem overcast.  High temperatures will stay cool as they only get to the mid 50s. Some clouds will linger over the area tonight as the cold front passes through Baton Rouge.  It will stay chilly with low temperatures in the lower 30s.  Expect some patchy frost once again. Rest of the Week :  The area of high pressure will remain over the Southeast U.S. on Thursday and we will have a very pretty day with sunny skies.  It will be cooler in the wake of the cold front with high temperatures in the low

We will stay unseasonably warm and humid today as southerly winds continue to pump in the Gulf Moisture.  A cold front will be slowly moving into Northern Louisiana today and that will help to set off isolated showers and thunderstorms with mostly cloudy skies around Baton Rouge this afternoon.  High temperatures will be around 80.
