Cool Today, But Heavy Rain and Storms Return This New Year's Weekend

Today will be a nice and cool day, but do not get used to it.  High pressure will move over us, and that will make it partly cloudy as high clouds move us the region. Highs will be in the upper 50s.  Tonight will become cloudy and it will stay cool/chilly.  Low temperatures in the lower 40s north and upper 40s south will actually occur near Midnight, and then they will rise through the night.   Our wet weather pattern will begin on Saturday.  The area of high pressure will move east of Louisiana, and this will bring back the southerly flow over us.  We will warm up and have plenty of Gulf Moisture stream over us.  Plus, we will see plenty of Pacific Moisture move over us aloft as an upper-level low moves from Baja California toward the Rockies.  This will all lead to scattered showers and thunderstorms starting by Noon and they will last through the day and night. Some of the rain could be heavy at times. Highs will be in the upper 60s.   If you are headed out to any New Year

Cold Front Brings Us Rain and Cool Temperatures Today

A strong cold front will move through this morning.  It will bring us some scattered showers and a few thunderstorms during the morning.  Then we will become clear by the afternoon with breezy conditions and falling temperatures.  Highs will occur this morning around 70, then we will be in the lower to mid 60s this afternoon.  It will remain clear and MUCH COLDER tonight.  Lows will be in the mid  30s  north with some frost, an in the lower 40s south.  Protect plants/pets/people north of the lake. High pressure will build over us on Friday.  This will keep it clear and cool with highs in the upper 50s.  Friday Night will be mostly clear and chilly with lows in the 40s north and around 50 south.   Our weather will start to go downhill on Saturday ahead of our next cold front.  High pressure will move east of Louisiana, and this will bring back the southerly winds.  We will see more moisture over us and warmer temperatures.  This will lead to scattered showers and a few thunders

Mostly cloudy, foggy and mild today with a few showers possible

DENSE FOG ADVISORY in effect until Noon WEDNESDAY for Lakes & Coastal waters and land areas More of the same weather is expected today, and that means more fog with muggy weather. A cold front has stalled just north of us, so we are stuck in the warm sector.  Expect today to be mostly cloudy, muggy and mild with dense fog for much of the day over water areas.  Highs will be in the upper 70s.  More fog is expected tonight with mostly cloudy skies and a few showers ahead of a cold front.  Lows will be in the mid 60s. The next cold front will move through on Thursday Morning.  This will bring us scattered showers and will help to get rid of the fog.  The rain will come to an end around Noon, and then we will become clear and breezy during the afternoon hours.  Highs in the mid 60s will occur in the morning before the cold front arrives.  Then we will see temperatures in the upper 50s to lower 60s in the afternoon.  Thursday Night will be clear and MUCH COLDER with lows in

A Look At New Orleans Past Weather Events On Christmas

Over the years we have had a wide variety of weather in New Orleans on Christmas Day! We've had Spring-like weather, severe weather, extreme cold and even one White Christmas.   Do you remember the Christmas of 1989?  Just before Christmas on December 22-23, we had a record cold blast in the city.  On the 22nd we had a record low of 15° with 1/2 inch of snow! On the 23rd, we had a record low of 11° - YES in New Orleans it got that cold!  These temperatures caused local ponds and lakes to freeze.  Roads and bridges were iced over, so you couldn't travel anywhere!  Pipes were bursting everywhere since high temperatures were not getting above freezing.  The snow melted before Christmas, but it remained VERY cold with a high of 49°. The coldest Christmas high temperature was back in 1983. We woke up to a morning low temperature of 14°! Then we only "warmed up to a high of 27° - now that feels like Christmas! Last year we had a record high of 82°!!  I was here for that
Today will be another gloomy one across the region. We will have foggy conditions sticking around for the morning with mostly cloudy skies all afternoon.  It will be mild with highs in the upper 60s.  Dense fog will be an issue tonight across the area with mostly cloudy skies.  Lows will be around 60.   Get ready for a mild and foggy Christmas Weekend!  An area of high pressure over the Gulf of Mexico will slowly move to the east toward Florida. This will bring back southerly flow over SE LA all weekend, and that means much warmer temperatures.  We will start out Saturday/Christmas Eve with some dense fog and it could stick around well into the day. Otherwise, it will be mostly cloudy and mild with highs in the mid 70s.  Saturday Night will be cloudy with more dense fog. Santa will need Rudolph to guide his sleigh for sure!! Lows  will  be in the 60s.   Christmas Morning will be very foggy with some mist and temperatures in the 60s.  The fog will likely stick around for much o

Mild Weather Continues Today, But It Becomes Much Warmer For Christmas

A weak cold front will sweep across Louisiana today, but it will not have much moisture associated with it.  Therefore, we will be mostly cloudy and mild with only a slight chance for a shower.  Highs will be in the mid 60s.  Tonight will be partly cloudy, but we will not see a big cool-down behind this front since the air mass behind it has a Pacific origin vs Canadian one.  Lows will be in the upper 40s north and mid 50s south.   Friday will still be a mild day with mostly cloudy skies.  Highs will be in the mid 60s.  Fog is possible Friday Night with lows in the 50s north and 60s south. Get ready for an unseasonably warm Christmas Weekend!  An upper-level low will move from Baja California NE into the Rocky Mountains.  This low and a warm front will transport in warm and more humid air from the Pacific and Gulf over Louisiana all weekend.   At the same time, a ridge of high pressure will sit over the Eastern Gulf and this will pump in southerly flow over us.   We will have

Winter is here and it will feel like it in New Orleans

Today is the First Day of Winter.  It officially arrived at 4:44 AM CST.  We experience the shortest hours of daylight of the year.  That means around 10 hours for us in New Orleans.  Temperatures will actually be what they are supposed to be this time of year with highs in the lower to mid 60s and lows in the 40s.  Overall, a somewhat typical Winter day in NOLA! We will become much warmer today as the winds shift from the north to the southeast.  High clouds will stream over us all day and that will give us a mix of sun and clouds.  Highs will be in the mid 60s.  Tonight will not be as cold with mostly cloudy skies as a cold front moves toward us. Watch out for some patchy fog into Thursday Morning. Lows will be in the 50s.   The cold front will move through on Thursday, but it now looks like we will not see much rain, if any at all.  It will be mostly cloudy and still mild with highs in the mid 60s.  We will become a tad cooler on Thursday Night with lows in the 40s north an

A Warming Trend Begins Today

We will not be as cold today as the area of high pressure moves east of Louisiana.  This will bring us NE to E winds and they will be lighter.  It will be partly cloudy with highs in the mid 50s.  I would still bring your heavy coat with you today, but you may not want the hat and gloves by this afternoon.  Tonight will be partly cloudy and not as cold with lows in the 40s.   Wednesday will be much warmer as SE winds return with partly cloudy skies.  Highs will be back in the mid 60s - just above what it should be this time of year.  A cold front will move toward us on Wednesday Night with partly to mostly cloudy skies.  Lows will be in the 50s.   The cold front will move through on Thursday, but I'm not expecting much rain with it. Look for only a stray shower as the front passes through by midday.  We will be mild with highs in the mid 60s, but the temperatures will slowly fall in the afternoon into the 50s.  Friday will only be a few degrees cooler behind the cold front

Staying Blustery All Day In New Orleans

A cold front brings us rain, wind and much colder temperatures today

A strong cold front moves through this morning.  It will bring us scattered showers and a few thunderstorms throughout the day along with windy conditions and much colder temperatures.  Our high temperature in the 70s occurred early this morning.  We will fall into the 40s and stay in the 40s through the afternoon.  It will be a blustery day, so bundle up if you are headed out today!   Tonight will remain cloudy with scattered showers.  It will also be chilly with lows in the lower  30s  north and upper  30s  south.  There is a VERY SMALL chance for some sleet pellets or freezing rain north of the lake between 3-6 AM. Fortunately, IF it happens, it will not be enough to cause any travel issues since the showers will be ending toward daybreak.  Monday will be a raw and cold day with plenty of clouds around and a few showers.  It will stay breezy with highs in the mid 40s, but it will feel like the  30s .  Make sure you dress warmly tomorrow!  Tuesday will not be a cold, but it
